Net framework 2

*sigh* I'm having trouble installing .net framework 2. I'm running XP sp2, and everytime I try to install this, I get an error message:


Error 25015.Failed to install assembly 'C:\windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\System.Design.dll' because of system error: The system cannot find the path specified.​

I've tried reinstalling numerous times. I've looked at the Microsoft .Net troubleshooting page to no avail. I've uninstalled v1.1 and reinstalled it (I was getting desperate). I'm really hoping that I don't have to reinstall Windows :eek:

Would this be caused by a registry problem (something deleted through 3rd party registry cleaner)? Carelessly deleted file?

PLEASE HELP!

Right now, no, but that's because .net automatically uninstalls the files when the installation fails. I can open the folder and see the file when the error message occurs during installation though (I'm about 99.9% sure, I'll test again later to verify).

If you copied and pasted that directly, the problem would be because theres a space between "Sys" and "tem", unless you just typed it wrong.

Yeah, it wouldn't let me copy and paste. Yes, that's a typo (however it wasn't there until actually posted... I tried fixing it and the same thing happened again. Who knows.)

Can you try to run the tool described at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspx to clean up the .NET Framework 2.0 installation then re-install to see if that helps?

If not, please try use the SubInAcl tool described at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/08/09/449720.aspx to try to fix any permission issues that might exist on your system. It might solve the issue you are seeing.

If neither of those help, your best bet is to contact Microsoft technical support for further troubleshooting assistance. There is contact information at http://support.microsoft.com/?LN=en-us&scid=gp%3Ben-us%3Bofferprophone&x=15&y=12. That site says that you have to pay, but for setup-related problems such as this, there is not a support charge.

Annie, your reply came just a bit late ;)

I just went ahead and did the dreaded complete system restore (back to factory defaults). Despite the inconvenience, it probably was about time I did that (all those darn orphan files and such). That solved my .net problems and brought about some other problems... all fixed with a bit of tinkering. Thanks for your help!
