Sins of a solar empire

Has anyone played this? I am about 10 hours into it and I am really enjoying it so far. It is a lot slower pace than what I am used to, but the amount of depth more than makes up for it. The learning curve is STEEP, you will have to play through a few games before you are really comfortable with what is going on, but it is fun through it all.

I like the game but after the intro video I was expecting a great campaign but there isn't one. It's only got multiplayer/skirmish mode, that's not necessarily bad but it was unexpected.

Do you have any tips for a beginner? Anything you think I might not know?

upgrade to your long range frigates earlier rather than late, theyll be your main fighting force

first capital ship is free after that they're not worth the money

dont waste money on pirates

your main goal is too expand

never forget about your allegiance

i still havent figured out the pirate system... I can outbid my enemy and the pirates STILL attack me. and the enemy will raise the bounty on me just a minute or two later. the pirates never do any major damage but they are definitely annoying. i can only imagine what i would be able to do if i didnt have to babysit a fleet to get rid of them every time they attacked.

also, do you recommend going for military technology from the start, or logistics? and what is the best way to defend a planet. i use a ton of the stationary guns but they are weak and only have a limited range

I always found capital ships to be worth the cost, you just need to spend some time ranking them up.

The best way to defend a planet is to have ships there, stationary guns are OK but their limited range and numbers means you have to position them very well.

yeah after some experimenting last night, i found that the most diverse fleet usually wins.

i always garrison a chokepoint planet with stationary guns and a repair facility so that whenever my capital ships are damaged i can just pull them back to that planet and not have to worry about it. a high level capital ship can make or break a fight...they are something you can't afford to lose.
