I still don't understand how the PS3 and Xbox 360 can play modern games.

And I'm talking about Graphics. With their GPU's, is some of the graphics processing done on the CPU?

Please explain to me how it works ^_^

ps3 and xbox 360 both have a gpu and a cpu. and the way they can play modern games is because they are coded to be play on a console and then usally the game will get ported to the pc later and will be crapy on the pc

By "crappy on the pc" I think what jareeB was trying to say is thus,

Games programed for Xbox/PS3 have a direct interface with the hardware, e.g., no OS to go through. Only the game is running, all the hardware and resources are availible to the game.

When a game is made for PC running windows the game has to "go through" the OS, which slows down operations extremely, i.e., dividing the amount of ram available, cutting down on available CPU time, etc.

Nope, CPUs are (relative to the GPU) EXTREMELY SLOW. If the game is 'smart' all graphics/draw calls will be done on the GPU. The reason is GPUs have more cores (something around 128 is the average), compared to 4 on current CPUs. There is some bandwidth/pipeline, blah blah blah as well which also makes GPUs faster,

but I think you get the idea, and your question answered.

It's not crappy ports, it's lazy developers.. the MOH beta for PC has a "adjust your TV position" setting...

And then there is a lack of optimisation, think GTA IV.

They are much more powerful, but the console games are coded specifically for that console. All of the hardware is the same(or as near as makes no difference) on every system, so the code can be very specific. The hardware is also a bit abnormal, compared to a computer.

top of the line computers are way more powerful than a console could ever be

As everyone is saying, a 360 game and a PS3 game is coded specifically for that console, but there is limitations, it is the same as all GPU's it will reach its limit hence a new console is released, PC on the other hand you can alter graphics to max it out or lower it to what you because you have the option to your own graphics card where as 360 and PS3 have a designated card all the time so the developers get the best performance they can out of it when they code it

That is because a console is outdated soon after it hits the market. Maybe even before that.

Also to what your saying the reason a console is outdated so fast is because they need to be a perfect match CPU to GPU, where as a computer you can have what you want you ever see a console having RAM problems? or needed to redo thermal paste? or even heating issues? nearly never, the xbox 360 issue was caused by a faulty capacitor and were fixed in the newer ones. computers are just built and do what we want consoles have to be problem free.

I agree with what hes saying and heres why....The new Mafia 2 game just recently released on PS3 had to have some game features removed so the Ps3 could get decent framerates.

The PlayStation 3 version became subject to controversy on 2K's Mafia II forums when 2K's interactive marketing manager Elizabeth Tobey stated that the PlayStation 3 version would be missing certain features that were present in the PC and Xbox 360 versions including three dimensional grass, pools of blood forming under dead bodies and realistic cloth physics.[23] These features were said to be present in earlier builds of the game, but had to be removed to increase the game's frame rate.

Theres actually a video on youtube comparing the PS3,360 and PC graphics for this game and the PS3s looks horrible compared to the 360 and Pcs.

Feel sorry for those PS3 players :/

Isn't the ps3 more powerful technically then the 360? Why would they need to leave stuff out of that version but are able to leave it on the 360?

^ You know there's more to it than that...let's not turn this into a Windows bashing thread, hmm? I mean really...it's not like any other OS's could do it better. The lack of a traditional OS altogether is part of what makes this possible.

I was referring to computers, not consoles...

There's several reasons why an "old" console can still look good, one reason being that when a developer codes a game for the console, there is only 1 type of hardware that they have to worry about; with computers there's any number of combinations, including "dated" hardware that way as well. Plus, going off of that, as developers work with the hardware for the consoles, they can continue to push the console to the limit.

Yup.

Basically, computers are ever-evolving and consoles get upgraded every few years. This means it takes a while to max out the consoles resources, code for it efficiently etc etc.

With PC's you have a fast spectrum of hardware (different CPU's and GPU's from different brands and generations) and software (operating systems) to code for.

And because many console games look horrible. There are many console gamers in my dorm and whenever they see me game on my computer they are also surprised by how much better it looks than their console.

That happens to me as well. I played Need for Speed Carbon on Xbox and PC and I got a few more options on pc than I did from Xbox

I love my phat PS3 with all the extras it provides and also love games such as the Fifa series (Fifa 11 soon woo) and Gran Turismo 5 (long time in wait going to be awesome) I am very happy with what the PS3 provides and to me its a no contest PS3 > Xbox 360 anyday. The games graphics are still improving on the PS3 so i think it will be around for years yet before they release the PS4.
