Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 not working

Hello all,

It's been a while since I've been on here, but I'm stuck.
I have COD4:MW2 on PC (through steam, obviously). Recently, COD stopped working. Every time I start it up, in either Single Player or Multiplayer, the game doesn't work. In single player, the game starts up (I can hear it) but I only get a black screen, then nothing (noise keeps playing though). In Multiplayer, the game starts up, it gets to the main menu, and then nothing. I can hear sound, but its like the game is locked up. The mouse doesn't move. If I wait 2 or 3 minutes it kicks into action again, but that's annoying as hell to wait for. I haven't tried waiting to see if Single Player eventually gets working, but i know for sure it doesn't work for a good 2 minutes at least.

Things I've done for troubleshooting:
-delete local content through steam
-reinstalling COD
-reinstalling steam and COD
-deleting the 2 .cfg files from the COD4:MW2 folder in the steam folder
-disabled all startup items, followed by a restart
-looked for patches, but apparently steam keeps it up to date
-ran Windows memory diagnostics- passed with no errors

It used to work all the time. The only things I think I changed since I last played was I installed Mafia II and updated iTunes/quicktime (oh yeah, and I installed Peggle from steam). Neither of which should affect it. Anyone have some input on what could be causing this/ how I could fix it?

ps: I think it has to do with the game starting up. When I do get it going, gameplay works just fine. And this is the only game I'm having trouble with.

I'll try disabling anti-virus after this post....

I think you should try updating your video drivers. It doesn't seem like that would cause that sort of problem, I know, But it's one thing that could still cause that problem no matter what you did to try to fix it. Also, out of date drivers, can do some weird stuff.

Good idea! I didn't even think about video drivers. I know it's definitely not the most obvious thing, but it could relate for sure.

I also ran a few scans (MBAM and SAS) and did pick up a few things. Nothing serious and a lot of tracking cookies.

BTW, was the computerforum server down for a few hours? I could not for the life of me get here, but I could get anywhere else.

EDIT: Replaced video drivers. First time the game started up, but now I'm back to square one with the same problems :(

I did take a look for those, but I didn't see them. I'll do a search on the drive to see if they're present, I probably just looked over them.

Surprised I want to go back to MW2? Haha, me too. But my girlfriend is (slowly) getting into video games, and we can play MW2 together :).

I'll try taking off Mafia to see what happens. Everything stored on the cloud anyway. I guess I just didn't think there would be a connection between the two.

Anyway, thanks all of you for taking the time to help :)

Edit: I think I have narrowed it down to just MW2 being coded like shit. I found a download of a really old version of them game and replaced all of the COD:MW2 files. Guess what? Game starts up perfectly, crisply, and quickly. Then, I just get an error for having the wrong version of the game (single player works perfect). Basically, f*** Infinity Ward, and f*** activision.

Haha, now that she's found the world of computing, why does she even need me..... lol

I've gotten her hooked on Starcraft, heroes, COD4: 1&2, Starcraft 2, counter-strike, and a few others that I can't think of. It's pretty awesome though.
