My son has an XBOX 360. The DVD drive stopped functioning. The old drive is a “BENQ VAD6038 Xbox 360 DVD Drive” , First I am confused about flashing. Is flashing necessary to be able to play games? I have read it is necessary to read burned CD’s and DVD’s , if by that they mean ones that you burn yourself we do not care we just use purchased games. Please clarify.
Second, I purchased a different model not knowing that there were several different ones used. If flashing is not necessary to play games can I use the different model?

What M$ does with their x-box is bind the mother board to the cd drive. If you just swap out the drive it will not be able to read any game. To get around this you can buy the same cd drive and swap out the chip on the cd drive (you have to make sure the chip on the cd drive is not the problem (if the drive spins and trys the read the disk its prob. the laser in which case you can replace it)).

What they were talking about flashing can be used for illegal activities.

If you tell us the model of the current cd drive and the one you bought we can try to help you more

You'll want to return the drive if you can and buy an exact replacement. It used to be that certain drives were interchangeable if you flashed the firmware on them, but I believe that gets you banned from Xbox Live these days.

Anyway, like brian said, the Xbox's motherboard and the board on the drive are married, so you'll need to swap the board out of the old drive into the new drive or it won't work at all. Keep in mind that there is some minor soldering involved so make sure you have the equipment and know-how.

Side Note: Most of the time if the drive isn't reading discs, you just need a new laser rather than a whole drive. I would actually consider this a bit of an easier repair because you don't need to do any soldering other than removing a small bead from the new laser. Of course, if it is something other than the laser then you'll have to get a new drive anyhow.

Thanks for the info. I have made many fixes to computers. I figured the XBOX 360 can not be any worse, but it is much worse.
