Post Your Top 5 "Video Game Commandments"

Simple. Post your top 5 things that every game should have by default, not as a premium feature or an option that you cannot change because the engine is locked down. Here are mine:

1) Thou shalt include a way to change the field of view to one's desired setting

2) Thou shalt not port from console without putting in real work

3) Thou shalt include sound engine that works properly

4) Thou shalt allow all to rebind keys

5) Thou shalt not excessively reuse assets from previous games

Your turn.

ok lemme try:

1. thou shalt allow custom multiplayer map making
2. thou shalt not over use physics just because "the explosion is nicer then" - acutal quote from a friend who is in a dev team with me.
3. thou shalt not allow spawn killing - it sucks when that happens.
4. thou shalt upgrade the graphics engine every year and a half orso, not like COD which use a small update on the COD4 engine to make mw3
5. thou shalt make lobbies forbidden. - i hate lobbies, too much waiting

Thou shalt delete accounts that use hacks/aimbots
Thou shalt make the game playable without an internet connection
Thou shalt make the A/I more realistic
Thou shalt get rid of programs like Origin
Thou shalt do something about sniper campers... :P

thats all i got.

Assuming these are commandments for developers.

Thou shalt care about story line and immersion, trying to be new and original, before graphics.
Thou shalt continue to update the game (for several years would be best) and do lots of beta/testing.
Thou shalt allow (reasonable) customization and mods for game.
Thou shalt ensure all around fun game for everyone (including preventing cheaters and hackers).

Can't think of a 5th at the moment, I'll edit this if I do.

EDIT: See here.

Thou shalt allow LAN gaming with only 1 copy of the game

Thou shalt not artificially balance a strategy game by placing ridiculously low limits on how many units can be selected, how many units can be queued for training etc.

Thou shalt do everything within reason to eliminate or alleviate the need for micromanagement

Thou shalt not have an AI that forgets to play the game when it loses a few key buildings

Thou shalt not allow the AI to cheat just because I chose a hard difficulty

Thou shalt make call of duty a console exclusive.

Thou shalt make an effort to do a good pc game once in a while, not an half arsed effort...brink, rage, homefront...high :D

Thou shalt carry on being totally awesome (thats for BIS and arma)

Thou shalt stop children who say "1v1 me noooooaaaaa noooooob" from playing games on pc's

Thou shalt make joysticks much more affordable and less crappy for the cheaper ones.

4. thou shalt upgrade the graphics engine every year and a half orso, not like COD which use a small update on the COD4 engine to make mw3

Not really feasibly to be honest. Especially not every year and a half. I would say cod engine looks like crap now days but i still love the source engines current incarnation as well the RV2 for arma (i think its called RV2 the engine, could be wrong.) The cryengine is also fairly old yet it still looks fantastic. Bare in mind these little upgrades work wonders in cases, especially the cryengine :P

the cryengine 3 isnt that old, i use it and it looks like crap as my laptop sucks. but what i meant by the COD engine was that they recycle the engine for about 4-6 games, which in most franchises they use the same engine with tweaks and upgrades to make it look just that bit different

cryengine 3 is the same basic engine as far as im aware just upgraded, same with source, quake and rv2. There current incarnations, to my understanding, is that they all are fundamentally the engine that the companies started out with just modified. I cant think of any mainstream game that has made a brand new engine for a new game.

(I should note that i could be wrong so if i am please educate me :P)

my main one

thou shalt stop charging me out the ass for dlc's right after i pay 60 bucks (cod)

only game i will always buy dlc's for is battlefield, since they basically put a second game in, vietnam is amazing and bf2's thing is pretty good too, but it's not just 2/3 more maps of pure bs like the rest of the game cod

I'd probably add "Thou shalt optimise netcode for low-ping players" to that list.

Naah, that fits under the "Thou shalt ensure all around fun game for everyone." bit. Because if the netcode isn't optimized, no one is having fun.

I like jonnyp11's idea, but would word it as such.

Though shalt be reasonable when deciding the cost of a game (shooting for free whenever possible).

Bringing my total revised list to...

Thou shalt care about story line and immersion, trying to be new and original, before graphics.
Thou shalt continue to update the game (for several years would be best) and do lots of beta/testing.
Thou shalt allow (reasonable) customization and mods for the game, including community made aspects.
Thou shalt be honest when deciding the cost of a game (shooting for free whenever possible).
Thou shalt ensure all around fun game for everyone (including preventing cheaters/hackers, reducing lag, and no DRM).

From a programming stand point:
/* start programming rant

Thou shalt use more threads. Many, many more threads.

Thou shalt not port a console game to PC, without significant changes made. They are not the same thing, and shall not be treated as such.

Thou shalt not make LAN absolutely impossible. Playing a game with most of my friends takes way to much work to setup and get working. Organize better.

Thou shalt not take a old engine, tweak a couple things, and call it a new engine. Iseewhatyoudidthar.

Thou shalt make mapping of keys/controllers/etc actually possible. I don't use a controller, but most of my friends do. And even I like to remap my keys to fit my gameplay.

Am I being unreasonable? No. Coders are getting very, very sloppy. I've seen the source for some games, and I just shake my head. I understand, programming a game in a certain time period is very stressful, but I'm fine with waiting a couple more months, even half a year, if that means I get more optimized code that was actually written for my platform, not some shit port.

end programming rant */

Agreed. Did you know that lots of skyrim's code is done in x87 and when compiled, didn't have any optimisation flags set? That's truly shameful. There's a mod out there that's under 100KB that makes the game take better use of cores and converts that x87 to SSE
