Hey guys, my GF just got into CS:S but she's having trouble running it on Vista. It lags a lot, even more than on my 6 year old 300$ XP computer...

She is playing on a HP Pavilion DV6 (bought in 2008).

Let me guess, playing over wireless? Either use ethernet, or you have to dig into the registry, find the AudioSrv folder, edit the "dependencies" reg key and remove "MMCS" from the reg key, then disable the multimedia class scheduler service, and reboot.

Other than that, set the game to run as admin (if she has admin privileges) and in XP SP3 compatibility. Also make sure that multi-core rendering is turned on in the game settings. Also disable vsync for better mouse movement.

Yeah we both play on the same wireless network, thing is she can play Tomb Raider Underworld perfectly...

Do you mind explaining to me what this will change? I just want to know instead of doing without knowing :)

Thanks man!

Is it network lag or running at a low fps. To check fps, "net_graph 1" into the console. You need to be getting above 30ish FPS for the video to appear smooth. Ideally, you'll want a lot higher than that as it will naturally drop at times such as firefights or when there is a lot of movement/action going on.

Since its an older laptop, I'm suspecting the graphics card isn't top notch (that said CSS is fairly old as well) and it may just be too demanding for the computer.

what about trying to run it as a Windows XP SP3? r

I'll try everything and get back to you soon, thanks for the help :).

By the way, she is playing on AMD Athlon X2, ATI Radeon graphic card and 4GB RAM... Should be fine...
