Or have i got a long. long way before i get to that type of engine?

It'll give you a sense of all the things that go into making a game and the decisions that you have to make. UDK is much more advanced, but it also has a lot of good tools and well established workflows. UDK also has a large community, so you'll probably be able to find quite a few scripts that you can build upon or even use as is.

There is always a hurdle when moving to a new engine as they usually have different scripting languages and workflows for things like asset creation. So it'll probably be quite a journey. But don't give up.

I would recommend getting Microsoft's Visual c# (or visual studio), and starting to learn C#.

You can start with very easy, simple games, like "click this button as many times as you can in one minute", and advance, until you made pretty complex games.(Form application)

When you get the gist of the programming language, Microsoft has implemented xna studio, which is a library set in Visual studio, which can really help you make serious games. I made dozens of form games in highschool, and using xna, i managed to make the very-lame version of a limbo-like game.
