Is the room fully lit?

Is it sealed off (4 walls + roof + door)?

If so, build a safe platform

LDD
LD
LD

L=Ladder
D=Dirt (or any other block type)

Put the bed on top and sleep, no monsters can spawn
 
Still running into the issue where I can't harvest blocks from most objects in every world I create other than my very first one.

Very frustrating.
 
I hope nobody is playing Minecraft on 360 for the first time, the minecraft on PC is awesome, mainly supirior because of mods, and more precise control with mouse. If it came out on PS3, I wouldnt buy it either.

May be a silly question, but you're using a pickaxe, right? If you mine certain blocks with anything other than a pickaxe the block will just break and you wont get anything. I've not heard of anyone having as issue where it's not giving them stuff when it should.

Anyway, I've had a dedicated server up for a couple of days now. I posted it on a few forums and have had a pretty good reception. Lots of stuff being built, everyone helping each other out. So far it's been really great.

It's the beginning, before even having a pickaxe, with regular stone blocks. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember being able to get cobblestone blocks from stone blocks, with or without a pickaxe.
 
No, you cannot get cobble from stone without a pickaxe, only a few do that, like gravel, wood, dirt.Also, make sure you hold down the mine button, dont keep clicking it, I learned that when I first started playing MC.

Guess I just never realized that when I was playing on my first server. And yeah, I never really had the issue of not holding the button.

I am, I never played Minecraft on the computer before.

To drop the items that the block gives:

Cobble and Coal require a wooden pick or better.

Iron, Gold and Redstone require a stone pick or better.

Diamond requires an Iron pick or better.

Obsidian requires a Diamond Pick

Any shovel will get sand, gravel or dirt.

You can collect, dirt, sand, gravel and wood by hand

In terms of the speed of block breaking/collecting, from slowest to fastest:

Wood
Stone
Iron
Gold
Diamond

In terms of durability (how many blocks it will mine/collect before breaking)

Wood
Stone
Gold
Iron
Diamond
