PC Combat Flight Simulators

Played Ace Combat Assault Horizon round a friend's house yesterday, I enjoyed it, seemed like a pretty cool game. I was wondering if there are any games a bit like it for the PC? Basically combat simulators. I have heard of the H.A.W.X series, are they any good? I have a joystick and an Xbox 360 controller for the PC already.

Does it have to involve modern aircraft?

Edit: Actually, just checked what kind of game Ace Combat was, and I don't know many of those. Maybe get BF3 and hog the aircrafts all the time? :P

Would ideally like modern aircraft yes, don't mind older planes though.

Not sure if my PC can play BF3, Radeon HD 5870 and BF3?
 
I played it on my stock Q6600 and HD4850. ;) Yeah, you might not be able to handle it on ultra, but it will run.
 
IL-2 1946 is ana awesome WW2 sim, with a few hundred planes and its pretty realistic, the graphics are a bit shit and the game be boring sometimes though. Wings of Prey is more arcadey but the graphics are amazing and its fun as hell. Id recommend both of them but maybe WoP over IL2 if you want a fun game.
 
It seems like there used to be a good variety of combat flight games. Helicopters, jets, ww2 planes, and even Star Wars Xwing and Tie Fighter games.

Where are all the cockpit view flight games these days?

but yeah, none of these games are sims. Theyre all arcade flying games. WIngs of prey is probably the most realistic but even then its not a simulator.


Actual sims to sink your teeth into, DCS A10 is the best, modern flight sim at the moment


Janes f16 (or something) was highly regarded back in the day, still stacks well with the flight sim community.


The old IL2 is awesome as is MS combat flight sim (both very old)


IL2 cliffs of dover is regarded as going back to its roots in terms of simulation however i would stay away form it. Very poor game last time i played it, bad performance issues severely hampered my experiance.


Take on helicopters hinds dlc i believe has realistic flight models for combat helos.


Arma 2 while not a flight simulator is a general all around sim, could maybe check that out. Flight models arent very realistic but in terms of missions you can make your own to very realistic.

I believe lock on was another good one back in its day and can be had for a fiver at most game stores.


Most of the best combat flight sims are the old ones.



Best civvy flight sim (imo) is FS X, the new one is shit and aimed at the arcade crowd.



For any of them i would suggest a hotas set up. Joystick only may cause problems due to the amount of key strokes needed to really immerse yourself.

That's true they are arcade style, but still even those don't really come out anymore.

I had a fondness for the cockpit view games. Do we still have mechwarrior anymore?

Ahh ok, what sort of peripherals were you using? I have a single joystick and an X360 controller for the PC as well as the keyboard of course.

T flight hotas works really well on a tight budget, i ordered mine off cex for about 15 quid i think. For the price ya cant get better :P

Next up from the is the thrustmaster t10000 or w/e its called, has the same hall (think thats what its called) tech as the 300 quid warthog hotas. (The t1000 is a single joystick though)

Next best is saitek x52


Then you come upto the uber gear like the warthog hotas, the ch gear and the saitek x65f. Logitech have also put out an impressive hotas system but theyre lower models like the attack 3 are shit.
