Hi, my computer keep rebooting by itself only when i am playing command and conquer with my fren online. Other than that everything is all right.
At first i found out that my Graphic card fan stopped spinning, so i replace the graphic card fan and it works well for 2 days before the rebooting started again . But this time, the graphic card fan is still spinning when the rebooting happens. So i went to change to my spare graphic card and the rebooting stopped. But the spare graphic card fan also stopped spinning. But the computer doesnt reboot.

My Com Spec is as below..

P4 2.8ghz
1ghz Ram
Win Xp Pro ( service pack 2 )
MSI 865PE-V2 mainboard
Geforce Fx 5500 256mb graphic card ( spare card is Geforce Mx 440 64mb )
400w PSU

and also, once i tried to plug in my portable HDD, my com hang. however i tried plugging in my ipod, it works well...
Then i plug the HDD into my P3 com, it can work well...

any bros can help me ?
is my graphic card spolit ?
is my mainboard spolit ?

thanks alot..

Nope.. do you take help from a Sis tough? :P

but serious,.. it sounds like either something is overheating.. or (wich i think is the cause) you have a too big voltage drop on the Power supply :)

i mean,.. a external HD drains quite some power, so if the PSU cant handle it, the voltage drops too low, the pc crashes. If you use a better grafic's card (wich usually consumes more power), and in a game its putted to full load, the cards drains the most power, and the voltage could drop too.

this is what i make up from your post with what i know about it.. but,.. how many Ampere do you have on the +12V rail if i may ask? (because i could be completely wrong ofcourse :o)

You are not too far off there. The make and model supply would help in seeing if that was the problem. SpeedFan is a good freeware in finding out what the cpu and board temps are. http://www.download.com/SpeedFan/3000-2094_4-10067444.html

but my main problem is the rebooting while playing ONLY command and conquer. other than that, the whole system is fine.
the problem started after i reformatted my com and added a sata hdd.
i tried to remove the sata hdd. and the problem is the same. only when i use my spare graphic card then the rebooting stopped. but then dont know why, when i use my spare graphic card, halfway thru the game. the fan stopped spinning.. >.<
but i didnt get rebooted..
haiz....
so is the problem mainly on mainboard or the graphic card or the power supply?
:(

Probably command and conquer is using lots of resources and heating up your computer. When you are just browsing the web it doesn't need much of anything but playing that game might be making it heat up more than anything else. So much that it shuts down.

I think power supply... Perhaps C&C generals is loading your processor much, yur grafic's card much,.. wich causes the pc to tradin too much power from the PSU.. but how much Amp do you have on all the rails? there should be a stciker with a table in the Power suppy itself
Voltage (and after the voltages, there is a number wich indicates the Amp)
12V
3.3V
5V
-3.3V
-12V

especially since you said after you added a Sata drive... :) that one consumes power too.

In command and conquer options many are there any options to lower the detail of the game or stuff like that. IF you lower some things it might not do it anymore.

I know.. I may not know much about Pc's.. but occasionally im right :D

Of course! :P

And besides having the power dropoff while gaming another question could be asked as well. Was the bios ever updated? Another item to look at the battery on the board especially on a system that's been used for a few years.

there is a sticker on the PSY that show's it.. ir just do as pc eye suggested, and instal speedfan, and look what the actuall Voltages are

erm.. i dun really know how to read it..
so i just take the screenshot..

Your cpu temp was 34C there. That is the top temp seen. Board #2 is 24C seen there right under the cpu temp. Those temps are good. But that could be from a low current value. The Vcore at 1.55v is a concern. That should be down between 1.34v and 1.4v.

SpeedFan shows voltages for the cpu, the cpu fan, and the case fans not for the power supply. Amperage is the width of the current flow. The best way to find out what the amps are supposed is to first know the make and model supply there. A look at the specifications will tell what the maximum amps are for the 12v rails. That is how much current can be pulled from the supply not what you see at idle.

It shows that your temps are on the low side meaning your supply isn't stable or the board itself has an unseen problem. What make and model supply are you using? If the supply is on the way out that would explain quite a bit there. A bad cap will certainly make a mess.

ic.. but my psu is those that comes along with me old casing.. no brand..
so u trying to say that the psu is most likely the cause of the problems ??
