DX 10 for Vista!?

DX 9c seems to running ok here on Vista. With Vista out now what do you still see at Microsoft? DX 9c! That 2005 article has done nothing more then start a rumor mill. When the next version of Direct X comes out look over the information on it then to get the facts. Wait until someone installs DX 10 on an XP system and everything still works? We'll see then.

They posted this back in October, and then a few days later wrote another article saying that they were wrong. DX9.0L (as they call it in the article), is built into Vista, and allows you to use DX9 games and apps, even though it has DX10.

DirectX10 is not compatible with XP, and I highly doubt it ever will be.
 
DX 10 hasn't even come out as a separate download to try it one way or the other. Would you think an old 8bit dos game would run on a Vista machine? http://img338.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dukestartoffsu1.jpg

As far as I know, DX10 is already included on Vista, but just a crude version of it. If it doesnt include it right now, and has to be downloaded, then why does it say DirectX10 when you enter dxdiag?

That's due to the encoding into Vista there. One thing seen at Microsoft regarding DX 9 and previous versions is the continued updates which will most like see the equivalent to DX 10 while still requiring the original DX 9c be installed first and then updated when installing XP, 2K, ME, 98. Some form of updated drivers would have to be downloaded in order to see newer DX 10 orientated games run on an XP system. Presently both the early DX 10 included and DX 9c are on the Vista installation here.
 
The latest SDK redistributable is basically an online type of installer that downloads the updated DX drivers to bring the 9c and older DX versions upto the DX 10 standards while not being a separate package you can save to a folder. You will notiice that even Vista is included showing that while 10 comes along with it the updates will go on the ohter version mentioned as well. Eventually you will probably see a version of 10 that will update XP. But that would have to have the XP version of drivers there to work. Otherwise?

Waaaa t eeevvrrrr there! :P According to a few things reviewed at Microsoft the DX 9c will still be seeing some updates like the previous versions back as far as 2000, 98, and ME. But you won't quite see the previous download for installing DX on XP like you did when going frrom 7 or 8 to 9 or 9a to 9b and then 9c. The main core has been changed for video mainly. Apparently MS has to have something for that and sound rendering to update 9c on older versions of Windows.
 
Let's find out what other models are available first.
Nvidia released for the moment GeForce 8800 GTX and GeForce 8800 GTS both monsters in quality and power. Here are their stats:

ATI is still to release a native DirectX 10 video card. They have solutions for Vista like the mighty Radeon® X1950 but it' not a native direct X 10 graphics card. We wait eagerly some mid-end video cards for those who don't want extreme gaming at their feet.

The R600 series Radeon models will be screamers when they arrive. Performance reviews place them higher then either the 8600 and 8800 models. Gee I can't wait for that Radeon X2000 1,800mhz model. :D
