which PSU's are really quiet? i have narrowed it to corsair's HX series and antec's earthwatt series. are there any other manufacturers that carry really silent PSU's? and how about corsairs TX and VX series? or OCZ PSU's?

FSP do the Zen series of PSU's which are genuinely silent, but the power:price ratio is awful and they're not even that powerful to begin with. I can vouch for the Corsair HX as I have one and my graphics card fan is louder!

Basically if it has a 120mm fan or bigger it should be quiet enough to not hear. I have a xclio 1000watt with a 140mm fan and I cant hear it.

Misinformation, speculation, ignore, etc.

These are fine (but not OCZ), and Seasonic, which is the OEM for those Corsairs and Antecs anyway.

I'm speaking from my experience if you have a different opinion post it up but don't go dragging someones opinion through the mud.

Anyway, back to actually helping a guy with a problem.

I think for the most part, andy is correct. I'm also speaking from my experience, and my psu (thermaltake toughpower) is also very quiet, not that i
t matters because my computer is crazy loud...just the way I like it.

Basically loud is the new black

thanks for the help guys. the reason i ask is because i'm going to watercool, and my current PSU is the loudest component of my comp (with the exception of the DVD burner when it spins). anyways, someone one XS linked me to this great site that compares quality and noise of many of the most silent PSU's so you can take a look at it yourself also:

Actually, you're hurting him (if he was to choose to listen to you, which is doubtful, since he seems to not be clueless) with your "opinion", not helping him. Shopping by fan size in power supplies because you think larger means quieter is just wrong, sorry. Fan size is by no means the deciding factor, ever.

Now, let me help you understand the definition of "opinion". If you have an opinion, it's intangible and unverifiable. If you like brunettes over redheads, fine, that's your opinion.

Proclaiming your ignorant (in)experience with one brand of power supplies as an indicator that large fans make power supplies quiet isn't an "opinion", because you can be proven wrong. Noise is measurable. If you don't want me to correct you, don't say things that are wrong, and stay out of threads that are about things you don't understand.

Oh, you think so? That's nice. You're wrong though. How, exactly, did you come to the conclusion that your Thermaltake is quiet? By comparing it to the rest of your system that you acknowledge to be "crazy" loud? Thermaltake has a reputation for making the loudest power supplies around, and they've never made a quiet anything.

The reason my system is so loud is because I have all of the fans all of the way up. However, when I turn off all of them, I still can't hear the psu...I guess not audible is still not quiet enough for some people.

The best thing you can do is just ignore fortyways, internal problems.

What size P/S are you looking for in watts? Seasonic/Silverstone and PC Power & Cooling make some pretty quiet models.

watt size does not matter. i'm going for just quietness first, then quality, then watts. my earthwatts is currently pretty good with noise, as it is inaudible over the stock CPU fan. but once i switch to WC soon with S-Flex fans for the rad, i might want a near quiet PSU. anyways, thanks guys i think i'll go with a corsair PSU based on what everyone said and the reviews in that link i put up earlier

I have the Corsair HX520, and like Paul has said, this thing is as close to silent as you're going to get, honestly, it's great!

The fan on puts out a higher RPM when the PSU gets hot, which doesn't really happen ;)

OP wants a quiet power supply, your willingness to settle for less is irrelevant.

Are you kidding me? I said it was not audible, and you say that's settling for less? Not audible = you can't hear it, which is exactly what the T/S was looking for.

Anyways, we're getting off topic

Well, you obviously didn't mean literally inaudible, because that would make you either severely hearing impaired or retarded. There's no such thing as a 0dB PSU, not even the fanless ones.

Any Thermaltake or Xclio PSU is guaranteed to be much louder than his EarthWatts.

I do not have personal experience with Thermaltake PSU's, but they do have a reputation of making loud everythings. As for Xclio, my friend has one and its fricken loud. Even my Coolermaster Real Power Pro is quieter.

Anyways, I believe Seasonic made PSUs are extremely quiet.
