Laggy COD4

Recently, the servers I usually go into are laggy. One of the main ones I went into underwent some updates, with like maps and stuff, and before the updates, I was playing lag free, no matter my ping or anyone else's. Now, my ping is in the 100's, when it use to be under 70.

I am wondering if there is something that is causing this? Like a background application? I usually have the Zune Media Player open, Pidgin, XFire.

My A/V is Avast!, I actually think it got laggy after I started using Avast!, but that could just be me being paranoid.

Open to comments and solutions.

Thanks.

Well, try disabling the services or killing the suspicious applications. AN active scanning AV like Avast may result in slower HDD access and retrieve times which could put a Hamper on FPS.

If you can play the SP fine, it would put the blame more squarely on the server itself or your connection speed.

the ping sounds kinda weird, but if ur running on a x64 machine and havent updated Xfire in a while that could be the cause. If you have a x64 comp, update Xfire.

EDIT: also, I've read about the broadband bastards cheating people. Let's say you buy a 100mbit/s connection, on the add where you got it from, it says: Up too 100mbit/s Speed! Their basically saying it can be 1mbit/s too 100mbit/s, I read about this is the paper just a few months ago. (up too 100mbit/s)

I just played on that server without having XFire on, and it was lag free. I turned XFire on, and it was laggy.

Ping was the same both times, in the 90's.

Thanks.

ye although you can play lagg-free with Xfire if you update it. And easy way to do it is to press cancel while it's logging in, then it auto updates. Also to make it lag even less, when Xfire is on you can do a ctrl alt del, go to processes and kill the Xfire x64 process

also check peer guardian 2 if you have it. that totally screws with steam and assassins creed. perhaps cod4 as well.

Ohhhh! I've actually never thought of that!! I had one of those periods where my ping we're ALOT higher than normal, now that you brought it up it was the same day as I installed PG2 LOL!, The day after it stopped working (Not sure why) and my ping was back to normal. Havent thought of it until u brought it up now.

Xfire isnt bad, it's a great program, sure it's not the very best if ur comp is slow but it's a great way to communicate with other gamers :) if you havent tried it you should.

The high ping is caused mainly by the internet connection, not computer. Try closing programs like p2p downloaders, IM, internet browser and other program that may use the internet a lot.

yeah, when someone in my family is watching online videos on a different computer, or downloading, then my ping gets really high. and yeah, peer guardian murders my ping if it even allows steam to start.
