HD4850 1gig or HD4870 512mb?

Which is going to be better? Is the gddr5 gonna be all too much better than the gddr3?

The price difference from the only 1gig 4850 model to a 4870 isnt much, but for some reason, the 1gig of the 4850 is so attractive.

Why is it so attractive if it's roughly the same price? The 4870, regardless of VRAM, is better then the 4850.

I dont know, when I was first looking at cards I thought the higher memory would be best, but after reading a lot I saw that companies will just add an extra 512mb of slower memory to a card just for "bling" factor.

Now I know better though.

HD4870 will be better.

yea its like my brother (who has integrated video) said "dude it lags sometimes when i play madden, i need more ram!".. i was like dude, you need a new video card not ram. you have the settings maxed. lol

basically ram has nothing to do with processing the apps as long as its bandwidth is good enough and its not too small. past that it really doesnt increase performance at all. 512mb is plenty!

Ok, is there any sites that have listing of benchmarks or anything? So I can compare cards and see how much better the 4870 is going to be than the 4850.

I saw one site a while back, but I didnt understand what the numbers meant, and now I cant remember the site name either.

Ok, I was about to go with the 4870, but im worried about power usage.

My machine right now has a Corsair 520w psu. 3 hard drives, 1 cd/dvd drive, Intel quad core processor @ 2.66ghz, 4gigs of corsair ram, and then a energy effiecien motherboard from gigabyte.

I run no other cards except for the video card, but will my PSU handle the 4870? Or should I step down to the 4850?

you should add up how many watts your computer eats right now. if you add in the graphics card and it doesnt exceed your limit, then you should be ok. just have to make sure you have the needed cables to put it onto your PSU.

the GPU's specs and speeds are the most important part of a card. You only need a large amount of ram on it if you're running it on a large display. IE 1gig would be needed for a 52" LCD tv you're using as a monitor, 512 for a 26", 256 for a 17" and so on.

Ok, how do I add up the watts?

Is there a program that will give me a readout for my hardware?

Geeze, I dont think ill ever need 1gig than. Does it help at all with anything else? Like processing images while using photoshop or anything?

K, I get paid tomorrow, and just one last check. Does brand matter? Should I go with PowerColor, Sapphire, etc?
