My $1000 Budget Comp... Opinions/Advice?

Keyword: Presently.

My whole issue is about the RAM, I just want a motherboard that is compatible with DDR3 RAM, for future upgrading.

The motherboard indeed is not time tested, but not many DDR3 compatible boards are. That is a risk I am willing to take.

If you really want to utilize DDR3 RAM I wouldn't go with a Socket 775 motherboard then. Go with a Socket 1366 motherboard with an i7 Processor. If you want a Socket 775 you might as well go with DDR2 memory because Socket 775 won't be able to fully utilize DDR3 RAM speeds.

Look at the GIGABYTE GA-EX58-DS4 motherboard:

Wow. THANK YOU!

If I would have known that before, I would have dropped the issue long ago. i7 is not within my budget, and likely will not be for a while.

So... DDR2 is fine then... I guess I can shoot for 8GB DDR2 RAM then.

Thanks again for pointing that out.

Also just a good little newegg shoppin tip. Look for combo deals on things you were going to buy already. I'm going to be getting a 9950 and a 4870 and i got 50 bucks off and i was already planning on getting them anyway. It's really worth it sometimes, overall i'm saving like $80 bucks on parts i was going to get regardless so i have some extra wiggle room now

You really won't need 8GB of RAM, 4GB is way more than enough.

Yeah, I definitely realize that. However, either way, Im going for 2GB cards, so wouldn't 4x be more advantageous than 2x? (Even a 5% increase sounds good to me, since my price seems to keep dropping, I have quite a bit of wiggle room) (Side Note: Ill prolly only buy the first 2 sticks now, and another 2 sticks later (If at all))

Those combo deals are definitely sexy, but they don't combine on the 'Wish List' and they tend to change rather frequently... So in interest of planning, I'm just going part by part.

1. How powerful of a power supply might I need for this system? (If possible, again, I will take the power supply from my current computer) (Any recommendations?)

2. The liquid cooling... Basically in general, looking for pros/cons. Or should I just stick to fans for this system?

3. A final question, a bit off-topic, but I have never overclocked before, I am interested in doing so... Any advice if I decide to?

Short of all of that... Opinions and Advice on this system?

PSU won't hold it. I have a 585W hec Orion also, barely holds my system (although it does hold it quite well :))

OCZ GameXStream 700W, Rosewill 650W, PC Power and Cooling 750W, Corsair 620HX...

Fanz :)

After market cooler, MX-2 thermal compound, silent but decent case fans.

Damn, you guys have given me such good advice, I barely even know what to do lol.

That core looks very promising as well, while I might not get the same multitasking power out of it, the gameplay from it would probably be exceptional. So one question there. Most of my multitasking includes media(Playing, not writing) and having a web browser open, then Ill be playing a game sometimes (Although Im not gaming 24/7, I would like extreme gameplay-ability). So in this case... Which core would you go with?

Also, could someone help me pick a new motherboard? I picked this one because it was rather cheap and could handle DDR3 memory... But Im going to drop down to DDR2 memory (High end DDR2 at least) So yeah, I just want a motherboard compatible with what I have picked so far, but with high end DDR2 capability, and hopefully a rather low price.

Yes! DDR2 is gonna be way cheaper. Beleive me! RAM speed is not as important as capacity! 4GB of PC2-6400 800MHz is plenty! You will NOT see a worthy difference from 4GB of DDR3...

And I know you want to be as flexible as possible with lots of upgrade potential. But how does that work? If you really will upgrade in the future to DDR3, you might as well get a new motherboard with the current technological advancement that they will have down the road. Don't get something that will give you "future-proof"-ness, get something that works NOW! In the present, that will work wonders! :)

Down the road when DDR3 is standardized, there are gonna be lots of new motherboards at cheaper prices!

About the CPU, personally I would get the E8400 or the E8500 simply for the speed and overclocking potential. If your "multitasking" involves internet surfing, playing music and gaming, you don't need a Q6600 IMO.

Sorry mate, I went out of control there, just trying to help.

Hey, not a problem. I like your style of losing control, it still teaches me somethin. Thanks.

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R motherboard is a good quality motherboard for $109:

This is also some decent RAM:
Patriot Extreme Performance 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 1066 PC2 8500 RAM - $75 (also has a $20 mail-in-rebate).

Alright, thanks for finding those, both look great to me.

UPDATED 1st post with new MoBo/CPU/RAM... Check it out! Thanks a lot guys, this computer is looking great by my standards. :D

Now, I do have a couple of specific questions.

1. How powerful of a power supply might I need for this system? (If possible, again, I will take the power supply from my current computer) (Any recommendations?)

2. The liquid cooling... Basically in general, looking for pros/cons. Or should I just stick to fans for this system?

Short of all of that... Opinions and Advice on this system?

I have the following power supply and I am very satisfied with it:

OCZ StealthXStream OCZ600SXS 600 Watt - $64 (also has $30 mail in rebate)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341010

You may want to ask if this power supply is adequate for all the components you have chosen (I think it likely is).

Ok My Turn

OK. My turn. For your budget. NewEgg is one of the best resources out there. They have many manufacturer rebates etc. You just have to sift through it all. Compare to what you find on www.pricewatch.com

These are the components I like . First of all for the best cooling and since the price has come way down, the Antec Nine Hundred gaming case. It’s quiet and has the best ventilation I’ve seen for ambient cooling so far. All fans have adjustable speed settings. It’s sweet. http://www.antec.com/usa/productDetails.php?lan=us&id=15900

Hard Drives: I like the W.D. Raptors. 10K RPM. The closest you can get to SCSI performance without the added expense. I run two 74G models together in RAID O that gives me a combined operating system HD of 138GB. I back it up regularly on a separate 7200 RPM 500 GB W.D. drive.

CPU: Intel has the CPU trophy for now. So the best deal you can find on an Intel Quad Core CPU on www.newegg.com or www.pricewatch.com ..

ASUS motherboards have not disappointed me yet. Stable, fast and highly over-clocker friendly. If you want SLI or similar multiple Video card support then look to ASUS motherboards with that support.

Memory? Corsair all the way.. The highest DDR MHz supported by the M.B. you choose. Their prices have come way down too.

Power Supplies? Many to choose from. Stay away from the cheapest that boast of highest watt power output. Stay with reputable brands. I trust BFG, Antec, Silverstone, Thermatake, OCZ, among others, 650W or higher continuous output.

DVD drives.. ASUS and Samsung. The rest is pretty standard. :)

Sounds good to me. Someone said earlier that 550+ is what I should shoot for. I love the price of that model, so looks pretty good. Thanks.

Its a shame I never joined this community before... You guys are really helpful. Thanks a lot, everyone
