(kewl! my thread was stickied!) :D

We get a lot of "What's your favorite Linux" type polls, so I though it was necessary have one official and delete the rest. Your thread seemed to be the most comprehensive - it even has an other option! :p

EDIT: Scratch that. I didn't delete the old polls, only the thread polls that have popped up since I stickied this thread.

Well, I can't say that I have a favorite because none of them are perfect. The last server I built I used Ubuntu mainly because I wanted it to be easy, and Ubuntu has a very simple and easy approach. Which is the right way to go, over complicate things and they are harder to work with.

I however, checked box, every Linux distro I have used on a somewhat regular basis. So I checked:

Debain
Ubuntu
redhat
suse (both open and enterprise)
gentoo
Yellow Dog (best PPC based Linux out there)

Can't say I really prefer one over the other. I am starting to like Debain based, but trying to get packages for Debian can be a pain and not supported at times due to it's strict licensing. Just wikipedia search "ice weasel" and you will see what I mean.

Ubuntu because I can order a free installation disk. I also use it in a computer lab I maintain. Ubuntu is close enough to windows that the average user has no problems.

I use Ubuntu because I'm still relatively new to Linux, but I recently recompiled my kernel for a custom distro, and a have played around quite a bit with all the scary inner workings of the OS recently.

I've run Ubuntu 7.10, 8.04, and will be getting 8.10 in a couple weeks :) Fedora 7, 8, and 9, Redhat 7, RHEL 4 and 5, Gentoo, and DragonflyBSD just for giggles. I'm looking very hard at going to PCLinux right now though because Ubuntu and VBox don't get along anymore.

I spent a few years hopping around trying different distros and seem to come back to openSuse every time. Especially on my main machine. To me it's the most polished distro of the lot.

I do have a test pc that is usually at least triple booted. I think the most OS's I ever had installed at once was 7. At the moment, the test machine has Ubuntu 8.04, Fedora 9 (best distro community IMHO) and Sabayon 3.5 (most fun distro).

I like ubuntu right now. I go through stages. Sometimes I want linux to "just work" and other times I want to spend countless hours debugging and compiling. Idk, I might switch back to arch here pretty soon.

My One (LFS)

Hey, I'm in the process of preparing to make my own Linux OS using this site called Linux From Scratch (LFS), which is basically a big online book with resources that tells you how to make your own Linux, so it's absolutely the way I want it! I can't wait to get started on it.

Now I gotta get the boot menus customized and install all the Beryl or whatever eye candy junk. It's been a couple years since I've used a Linux Disrto, so I'm not sure what you kids are doing w/ this OS nowadays. :p

Nice! What desktop are you figuring on using?

I'm going to be using Gnome, I like it a lot more than KDE. It is going to take a while to get to that stage though; the X window system is only implemented in BLFS (Beyond Linux From Scratch), which is the follow-up book for LFS, for people who want to turn their system into something worth using regularly.

Beryl is OLD... Compiz is what most people are using now. Just go to "System>Administration>Hardware Drivers" to enable the driver for your 8800 GTS. Then (if the effects don't work yet) go to "System>Preferences>Appearance." Then go to the "Visual Effects" tab and select "Extra" (you can select normal if you like, but it's not as good.) If you don't like the default settings you can configure them by running (in a terminal)

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Then close out of the terminal and go to "System>Preferences>CompizConfig Settings Manager. ;)

Ah! Have you tried KDE4? It's sick! It's not really too stable at the moment though. :p
