yep it's possible. you need software that can boot up from cd and manage partitions like partitionmagic or acronis partitionmanager. Then you can delete or format the old partition and install xp on it.

You don't need software to do it. When you install XP you can change the partitions before the installation.

What's wrong with vista?

You bring up a good point. If there isn't anything wrong with it, stay with it and give it a try. You'll have to switch sooner or later anyway.. I don't even think you can buy XP anymore, I could be wrong though. If you can, it won't be sold after Jan. '09.

no that won't work. xp will detect vista is installed and will tell you have a newer version of windows and therefore there is no need to install xp and then it aborts the installation. Follow the instructions i mentioned before.

No, not if you boot from the disc. If you start the installer in Windows, then yes, it will say that, but if you boot directly from the disc it doesn't say that.

I want to do the same thing, similar situation. I purchased the new desktop from dell mainly to DL live music and videos to be able to make DVDs etc. However, when I got the computer and tried to load the programs I use (uTorrent and Nero), neither of them work w/Vista. Nero wouldn't even load, but uTorrent did, but every time I open it, it freezes my system and forces me to manually shut it down. I have XP on a disc, and was thinking I could load that until Microsoft fixes Vista or comes out w/Windows 7. If I did this, and then tried to reload Vista at some point down the road (via the reboot disc) by reformatting, would it have any negative effects on my system? I know I'd lose everything on the HD, but I could back up anything I needed on DVDs. Would that work?
