Here are the specs.

core 2 duo 2.4 processor

8 gigs of ram

256 megabyte video card nvidia

all running on Windows x64

What happens is that when ever I try to open a video, the media player opens and then the computer gets really really slow, even my mouse starts to lag. I thought it was my media player so I tried GOP player, AVI Player, and still the same. I need help

Which 64bit version of Windows are you running? That might help here.

The problem is likely not having 64bit compatible codecs installed. When you go to play a file the cpu time is bogged down unable to play the media explaining the problems seen when trying to move the cursor around.

With 8gb of memory installed if that is XP Pro 64 that would be another likely concern. The 64bit editions of Vista are the ones that will offer support that much memory being installed.

You used to see that with WMP 9 and previous versions of the MS player where it wouldn't support video playback let alone running a dvd movie. WMP 10 with then saw codecs included in the update there.

If you are running the 64bit edition of XP many see results using stuff for Server 2003 as far as drivers. You may be able to use compatible codecs there. For Vista MS has been promoting 3rd party programs in order to get plugins and codecs seen with Cyberlink's PowerDVD and Roxio's own media player.

On just a quick search you can find a good number of sites when looking for codecs for the 64bit editions of Vista. Many will be adware infested or simply promoting a retail product. The site at the link here is clean and has a set for Vista Ultimate 64bit available at http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multim...-Video-Codecs/VistaCodecs-x64Components.shtml

Recently I had to see an entirely fresh copy of Vista go on when a tuner card would simply hear sound but no picture at all in Vista while everything worked perfect in XP. That was a replacement to another make and model that did work in the new version.

Finally not getting anywhere with the second brand I simply bought a second by the first brand and still saw no picture? A clean install of Windows was apparently what was needed since once a fresh copy went on everything worked! For some reason the initialization of video wasn't being seen for live input there.

Sounds like that 256meg video card isn't quite up to speed for the rest of your system... although it should run simple video just fine. Make sure you have the latest vid card driver installed. (or if you recently installed the updated driver, you might try uninstalling or rolling back to the previous driver for your card) I've run into crazy vid issues using the Win update hardware updates.

Have you installed the nVidia driver? I know I had to install my ATI driver before video worked properly on my rig.

What make and model NVidia card do you have in there? Can I assume you have a 64bit edition of Vista on correct?
