heyas,

im chucking together a new computer with my sisters advice (who is a computer junkie) but im also keen on a second opinion.

basically, is all this stuff compatible, and is there anything missing for a complete (system) build??

..sorry about the random links, the site were buying from doesn't have a great deal of info about each product.

Looks pretty good, although there's like no info on the RAM. Anyway, might I recommend that you order from http://www.newegg.com/ if you're in the US?

You may want more than a 500W PSU... I personally use a 400W one just fine, but as you're getting a gfx card you may want more (just wait for more answers on that one.)

As far as the cooler goes... the CPU should come with a fan as should the case.

Also, if I were you I'd get a Linksys wireless card, but the one you chose should be just fine.

As far as the GPU goes... I've never heard of Leadtek and doubt it's very good quality... from my understanding ASUS, EVGA, MSI, XFX, and PNY are good brands.

EDIT: Oh yeah, one more thing... make sure you get two sticks of 1GB RAM and not one 2GB stick.

I would encourage you to look at another Phenom Processor. The Phenom 9650 processor is only 95 Watt and is clocked at 300 megahertz faster than the Phenom 9350e and it is around the same price.

Get two 1 gigabyte modules of DDR2 800 240-pin RAM.

Recommended good brands of Random Access Memory:
Corsair
Crucial
G.Skill
Kingston
Mushkin
OCZ
Patriot
PNY
pqi
Super Talent

Everything else looks compatible.

Edit: What operating system are you going to use with this system?

- were in aus and will be buying it from these guys http://www.diyit.com.au/ (as they are semi-local)

- graphics cards would be one of these:
http://www.diyit.com.au/list.php?mode=category&id=65

i dont really know the difference between them, so any advice would be grand. (needs to be semi cheap though 200ish) and im fair sure leadtek would be an Australian thing.

"gigabyte" is a brand that seems to be everywhere on the site, again i think its an australian thing. (but has its own website etc.)

- why would i want 2x1gb rather than 1x2gb ram?

is it sorta like a dual core 1gig vs a single core 2gig? (if we were talking processors)

- with the Hard Drive, would a faster smaller HD for the OS and games with a larger one as well to store junk on have its advantages over 1 huge one?

- power wise the site doesnt have anything higher than 550w. (the price difference between the 500 & 550 being huge as well)

is a larger power supply a necessity, or jut to cover future expansions?

cheers for ya reply Irishwhistle :)

2048Megabytes,

were buying from this site, http://www.diyit.com.au/.

they have a 9750 is that the same sorta deal??

if were getting 2x1gig i would get Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400

and the OS will be XP ue to it being for games etc. (nothing thats vista specific)
unless you believe we should go vista??

EDIT: would we want unbuffered ram???

and whats the diff between

Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400 and
Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4

From what that website has available, I would go with the PHENOM X3 Triple Core 8750. It's 95 Watt and Tri-Core but I'm sure will handle about any video game you put it up against since it has a decent amount of cache. The 9750 is a 125 Watt processor and is Quad-Core. I would get the 8750 since it is priced better and it consumes less power even though it has one less core (I doubt you would notice much of a difference in processing power with what you are using it for anyway).

Get the Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400 RAM. Yes, you want unbuffered RAM.

If you don't want to learn a new operating system XP is fine. But if you do go Vista buy the 64-bit version since it won't hold you back at the 3.25 gigabyte barrier. Windows XP can only utilize about 3.25 to 3.5 gigabytes of RAM. Windows Vista Premium 64-bit has better security features and can utilize over 6 gigabytes of RAM.

2 to 3 gigabytes of RAM is plenty for Windows XP presently.

ahk so in general, a top of the line X3 processor is better than a low end X4?

OS can always be upgraded later i guess.

is a 500w PSU going to be enough??

and what is a good video card? ive just assumed that a 9800GT will be decent. is there a better card? or an ATI equivalent?

cheers for ya help 2048

The 9800GT is a good card, he was talking about the brand you were buying it from(if that's what your referring too). I personally like Nvidias over ATI my self, but thats just my preference people will tell you either way. 500W will be enough.

Comparing the particular X3 Phenom with the Phenom 9750 I would say the Phenom Triple-Core 8750 is better. The cache is almost the same with both of those processors and clock speed is the same, but the Phenom 9750 consumes more power. The only thing the Phenom 9750 would be better at is multitasking (running more than one program at the some time.) Programs presently are not coded to run better with Quad-Core processors. Less power consumption makes the Phenom 8750 a winner in my opinion.

Ah! OK, well that explains the prices then. :)

Well, believe me, Gigabyte is not just an Australian thing... I think nearly everyone on CF agrees that it's one of the best brands for PC parts (mobos and such, I would assume their graphics cards are good too.)

As far as the RAM goes, you can think about it that way if you like, but that's not quite right... having two sticks of the same exact type of RAM rather than one stick makes bottlenecking a lot less likely, I won't go into details (partially because I don't entirely understand every aspect of it myself), but it's just important that you know to buy two sticks of 1GB DDR2 800 240-pin RAM.

As far as the PSU goes... I would guess that you'd be fine with 500W, but I'm just not very familiar with graphics cards (I've always used integrated graphics) and I know they can take a lot of power to run.

EDIT: OK, it appears that 500W should be fine. Anyway though, yeah, I was talking about the brand of graphics card... both nVidia and ATI are very good, it's the brand (Leadtek) that I'm not so sure about. They may be fine, but I personally would buy a brand like Gigabyte, EVGA, or MSI.

I disagree as the 9750 has a whole other core, but they are both very good CPUs and you probably won't notice too much of a difference between the performance. Of course in your case, with a 500W CPU, the 8750 may be better as it does have less power consumption.

Heres an update (im Bee, well, her boyfriend, whom has written on behalf of her for all the bee posts as well [just to clarify])

the amount ive learnt in the last 2 days about computers from solid research is.. wow.. yeah, well, heres what im looking at now. (the number after the link is the price)

i would rather a cooler master PSU, but i would have to go to a diff supplier, and would rather get it all from the same place.

- so is the PSU ok?? its cheap and powerful, so i would think its gonna blow up, but its gigabyte so its reputable..
- motherboard ok? the MA78 seems to be decent mid range mobo from what ive read.
- what Graphics card? :S
- and i think a dual core will suffice. (yes or no?)
and then there's the will it all work together thing (im 90% sure it would)

Most Athlon 6000+ processors are 125 Watt. The Phenom 8750 or 8650 is a better processor that is 95 Watt. It also has more cache and arithmetic logic units than the Athlon 6000+. I would get the Phenom 8750 or 8650 processor over the Athlon 6000+.

If you are going to look at the Athlon 6000+ I would advise you to get the "model ADV60000DOBOX" that runs at a 3.1 gigahertz clock speed. This model of the Athlon 6000+ only uses 89 Watts.

I see you are looking at the Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H motherboard now. That is the motherboard I am currently using. It performs well except the onboard video card is not good. It caused continual crashes with me, but I haven't had any issues since I added a video card a few months ago (as you are going to do).

The Samsung 1 Terabyte HD103UJ hard drive is over priced. Get the other Samsung 750 gigabyte hard drive. Everything else looks good to me.

Edit: What operating system are you using with this system?

ahk, the X3 cores are quite a bit more costly though, and ive been told by a mate that a 6000+ will be ok.

i know that theres 2 diff types, its a trade off for cache or speed isnt it?

im keen for the 3.1 one, (specially as it also has a 65nm construction apposed to the 90nm)

i dont know what system. i have XP on this one, and ill be ditching it so i could just use XP.

or i could buy vista. XP seems to work fine i think..
maybe i should buy XP so i can leave this computer in a diff room for LAN-ing?

what about the video cards? do you know much about them? i know its a good card, but is it really needed??

and do you think the PSU would be dodgy? im sora 50/50 on it

You don't need a 720 Watt power supply. You could get this Thermaltake 550 Watt power supply for $117 and it would be good enough:

http://www.allneeds.com.au/prod463.htm

That video card is good but it is quite high in price. I would put a price cap of $175 and look around at more video cards. You should be able to get a decent card for around $175 Australian currency.
