Okay, so my HP dv6775 with Vista Home Premium did some automatic updating last night, and once I woke up, it was all screwed up.

Printer doesn't work, and cant pull up printers from the control panel

Connects to an "unidentified network" but has the SSID in parentheses next to the notification.

I have searched, and nothing has helped, and I even plugged an ethernet cable in to see if that would fix it, but nope.

He just reinstalled windows and it worked again

I had this happen on a unit recently. It said connected in the screen in the right corner but IE and Foxfire would never connect.

I dug around and found out some stuff.

Check your folders and see if ZONEALARM has ever been installed on your computer. There was something in the Zone alarm files that kept IE and Foxfire from opening. It was a pretty detailed.

I had to wind up turning off system restore,,putting the computer in safe mode and running AVAST then I had to go into the registry and back out some stuff.

It was not easy but I got it done.

Be sure to turn back on system restore

Or you could simply back up your data and do a fresh install.

I do not know about Visa, I love XP and keep asking for downgrade when I buy new computers :). Anyways, I had a similar problem in XP after updating. What I did - restore the system to a configuration before updating. True, I lost 2-3 days of work, but it was easy to recover everything. I do not like to format the harddisk and take it over as long as I do have another option.
Or don't you have a backup? You could use it and it will be faster than reinstalling everything.
