64bit XP Pro or Vista?

So I want more than 4GB of RAM support (currently on 32bit XP Pro SP3), and I'm not sure if I want to go with 64bit XP or to 'upgrade' to Vista.

With 64bit XP, the fear is about finding drivers and having games/software work properly (I do quite a bit of gaming on my system)

And with Vista, the fear is its bloatedness, its DRM crap, and from what my friends tell me: "its pretty much crap." They've gone back to XP Pro.

So is Vista as bad as everyone say it is? And how much trouble would it be to get 64bit XP up and running?

My system specs:
Thermaltake VA8000
Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3
Brisbane 5000+ Dual Core 2.6GHZ
EVGA GeForce GTX 260
4x1GB G.SKILL DDR2 800
PCP&C S75QB 750W
Hanns.G Hi-221DPB 22" LCD
Windows XP Pro SP3

Vista without a doubt,Xp 64bit driver support is bad,and it doesnt have.... or will ever be able to support DX10.

Yeah, XP 64 bit lacks the compatibility that Vista 64 bit has.

Plus, Vista isn't as bad as people say, just make sure you customize it to your liking and keep the bloat from 3rd party applications down, as with any other windows OS.

hmm...after some more reading it looks like 64bit XP is indeed a dead end. Good call on the DX10 thing, totally forgot about that.

At this point I'm just gonna wait for Windows 7, apparently MS is aiming for a Final Build release sometime in mid-2009: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10084486-56.html

I think I'll just hold off until Windows 7 is out and see how it is, unless it gets delayed then obviously I will have to move onto Vista.

As great as XP is due to lack of drivers and so on but i personally still hate Vista think it handles programs badly any way it may be worth waiting for windows 7

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7

Vista seems to run far more stable here and sees a much needed improvement in crash recovery when a game or app locks on you. Despite seeing 2 bad installs over the last year and a half since released for both stand alone and custom installs it has been generally more reliable while MS will still releasing security and other fixes as time goes on.

It took MS 7yrs. to see some 1,000+ fixes appear in SP3. XP was rushed out following the ME flop for the earlier then usual 2001 release.

well 7 is based off VISTA,So in my mind i dont think 7 is going to be all that good.

and who knows how long it will take MS to release 7.

Windows 7 will see the same kernel as Vista but will have a rather different approach to the main gui. The latest from PC World magazine on 7 can be seen in videos at http://www.pcworld.com/video/id,938-page,1-bid,0/video.html

The only driver problem I have found for windows xp x64 was for my web cam. so far, I have no problems with games. But, if you were to go with vista, I would go with the x64 bit version.

Vista is a great operating system...I have had only one or two problems with it, older programs that are not supported. I have been running Vista Ultimate 64bit and Home Premium 64bit since the day it was released. I had far more problems with XP than I ever have with Vista.

If you do choose Vista...I would not run a 32bit version...get the 64bit version.

Vista is a good operating system, There was a band wagon of people jut saying it was crap. Most problems I hear people say about vista is usually operator error.

With 4gb on at this time I hardly run XP for anything more then video capturing/editing since that part of the software won't work on Vista for some unknown reason while still being capatible. Some games wouldn't even install on the 32bit edition of Home Premium here being written strictly for XP!

That's another thing you have to consider when something won't go on or won't run once installed. Windows 7 will be the one here to see a 64bit edition still seeing the Vista kernel but a new main gui to work with. You might get away with a few Server 2003 drivers for things on XP Pro 64 while some major improvements have been seen in both 32bit and 64bit editions of Vista overall.

Vista x64 all the way its the better OS and has more driver support + DX10.

Also for most of the Vista hate started pre-SP1 which had some major issues....since then everyone bashing it is simply either to stupid to tweak his system or is trying to run it on a single core PC.

Most of the "issues" with vista are fixed....all the bloatware etc can be disabled.

I use this site for tweaking/info
