RAM limit?

Hi everyone,

Ok, I'll come right out and admit, I am a noob, but please don't hold that against me. I have a question about a laptop RAM limit. I have 2 GB of RAM on my laptop (an HP) and would like to upgrade to 4 GB. I was told that my specific model of computer cannot but upgraded (by geek squad and hp customer support), that 2 GB is the limit. However, today I removed the cards just to make sure they were not soldered in or something like that. I know they can be replaced but is there really a limit on what the computer can handle? What would happen if I replaced the RAM despite what others have told me?

Thanks for your help!

The first thing to actually be looking besides anything conveyed by Geek nerds  is the specifications for which make and model laptop? That will show the maximum amount you can run there and what speed of memory is supported.

I have an HP pavillion dv2000. The only reason I asked the geek squad is I just happened to be in Best Buy to get some compressed air. The guy looked up my computer on a website that shows compatability for each model computer. I guess what I don't understand is what makes one computer detect more RAM but not others? I know XP specifically won't detect more than 3 something, but I am running Vista. Is there something else about my specific CP that will not detect more RAM.

Thanks for humoring my questions!

it's your hardware limiting you to 2gb right now. Your motherboard won't support anything more. And your software (os) will limit you to something at about 3.5gb but that doesn't matter now because you won't be able to run anything more than 2gb anyways.

Putting it simple the board on that model simply doesn't support 2gb dimms to start with. The newer models now seen out see a much higher 4-8gb max with four dimm slots.

If you want 4gb you would have to replace that model with something newer seeing more capacity to begin with. But even with Vista you generally wouldn't be using that much ram to begin with. I've been running the desktop here for over a year with only 2gb until finally seeing memory prices fall for the 4gb now in.

Ok, Thanks for the help guys. Not necessarily the news I was hoping to hear but it also was what I was expecting to hear so I guess no harm done. I appreciate your info!
