Why does Vista hate me so? (Display problem)

G'day and thanks for viewing.
Apparently this is a pretty common problem. Whenever I OC my system in anyway (whether it be my GPU or CPU) and try to play a game (Fallout 3, Bioshock etc) the screen will freeze (not audio) and that lovely message will popup saying 'A display driver has stopped working but has recovered'. Why Vista..why.

So I checked nvidia for different drivers (beta maybe?) No luck. Even went and installed an Omega driver. No dice.

However, it will run stable for maybe an hour or more if my cpu is only a little bit OC'd (from 3.16GHz to 3.32GHz) but as for the graphics, as soon as RivaTuner is even installed, it goes ape.

Thanks for any enlightenment. Greatly appreciated!

hmm i havent heard this before, is you PC home built? because some manafacturers dont allow over clocking on their PC's, so people cant damage their components and their customer service doesnt get overloaded with fried chips. If so, try upgrading your motherboard?
sorry im not much help lol!

I used to get that message when I had my graphics card OC'ed too high. It sounds as if this is the case with you, since it happens when you have Rivatuner installed. It's probably nothing to do with your CPU OC.

Check Rivatuner to see if your card is OC'ed, if so, turn it down a bit, till it becomes stable. Or, turn the OC off.

That message is generated when you have a video card crash. They build safety shutdowns in the BIOS of the cards so it won't like start melting or catch on fire. I have only seen it when a card overheats. I have overclocked all my Nvidia cards just to see what their breaking point is and that is the message I have always gotten. (7900GT, 7950GTX, 8800GTX, 9800GTX, GTX 260)

You need to take a look at the airflow and cooling of your setup. Have you tried to turn up the fan a little? just to Post your idle and load temps for your card and CPU.

Thanks for replies.

Custom built pc first of all. Unfortunately as soon as RivaTuner is even installed it wont let me play. I delved into system32 last night and renamed my nvlddmkm.sys file to nlvddmkm.sys.old and replaced the drivers. Ready for a morning of quality Bioshock and bam it just freezes. It's beyond frustration now but I guess i have to choose between Overclocking or playing games. Kind of a catch 22' :p I guess going from 3.33Ghz to 3.16Ghz isnt too bad?

Thanks guys, Merry and safe Christmas to you.

doesent seem like much to do with your cpu overclock more your video card, make sure you have the latest drivers, make sure your card stays at normal temps and turn off all overclocking for your video card
