computer for mom...

my mom is going to be doing some restoring and editing of old pictures. She just bought an epson v700 scanner which scans at resolutions up to 6400dpi and she will in the future be using 2 eizo hi res monitors. the thing is, there wont be any gaming or video editing going on. just picture editing. Could I do this with just a 9600gt or something? she is already spending alot on the other equipment so she has a budget of 800$ for the comp.

heres what i threw together

The most important thing when doing photo editing with a program like Photoshop is RAM!! Photoshop is a ram hog, and when doing hi res pics it will take all it can get. The video card really does not have much to do with it since it's in 2d and not 3d it does not work very hard to render the pics.

Next is the CPU and then the hard drive. Any of the newer CPU's and drives should work fine, but a 10,000 rpm drive for storage would be a good choice. Fast read and write times are important.

Just thinking here, maybe you could buy your mom a laptop? I think she'd find that really suitable, so she can do all her tasks wherever she wants. I'm selling one, don't mean to self-promote my item for sale here but I really do think it would benefit your mom:
http://www.computerforum.com/140928-ibm-thinkpad-r60-lenovo-series-laptop.html

You can upgrade the RAM up to 4GB, which should be more than suitable enough for her, and very inexpensive for you. :)

They also have very cheap, very large 7200rpm HDD like the ones you're looking at on NewEgg for notebooks.

Just a thought.

Photo editing is best done on a large monitor, a laptop would not be a good option in my opinion. Working with a couple pixles at a time would really suck on a small 15 to 17 inch laptop monitor. I know because I used to have a 17 inch monitor and it was a pain to do hi res photo restoration on it.

after the price cuts i was inspired and i thought I'd be able to put an i7 build together for not too much more. I realize the bigger price cut was on the q9650 but I'm going to be moving out and I want her comp to be as future proof as possible. Obviously, because she wont be gaming, I got her an older vid card that will do what she needs for a good price. is there any way I can spend a little less? (I already have a dvd drive btw)

Make sure you budget in stuff like an OS and a decent photo editing app

Such a good son; mom will be tech-pimped with an i7. Maybe add a cpu cooler? I'd recommend one, but I'm not sure for that socket.

PS - pardon my assumption that you are a son, if in fact you are a daughter

Good selection of parts. I have used that mobo and it's good, stock cooler is perfect if you don't overclock (I clocked it to 3.2Ghz and was still under 60C loaded).

But for the case I would get this one - my favorite:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147105

Same great space inside as in Cent5 but with 2x 120mm fans on front instead of 1 80mm. Works near silent - fans from Silverstone.
Free shipping is just an icing on the cake. It's high quality case, won't be dissapointed.

So you want an i7 build for your mom's computer which will be used for photo editing?

You can build an excellent build for $500. You don't even need a video card, integrated is fine. Just get a Pentium Dual Core and 4GB of RAM and you should be set. Case and hard drive I guess are fine since its based more on personal preference. And for the power supply, just get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139003&Tpk=corsair 450w

In fact, you wouldn't even need to spend the extra on a Pentium, go AMD and you'll save money (How many times have I said that? :p )

But yeah, Omar is right, I use my rig in the sig for photo editing all the time without a problem. :)

dont buy a video card, it will never be in use not even 1nce photoshop runs good on my computer without a videocard,

the reason for this is videocards will only work for 3d with 2d they wont even be 1pct in use no matter how crappy it is, dont waste your money

if you do buy it even after 50 people has said dont lol get the 9800 because its the same price after rebate as the 8800 you picked out

the thing photshop uses is ram as others have stated it doesnt really use cpu to much, it will use up harddrive and ram though,

you dont need a aftermarket cooler for the i7 unless you plan to overclock witch there will be zero point in just a waste of money, unless your mom is playing crysis you dont need to spend 1000 dollors i think you could make a great photoshop computer for like 400

This exactly true photoshop will bog your RAM down a lot I would go for RAM from crucial because it is cheap but reliable. I would get like 4GB which will make this machine good for almost anything that you want to do on it.

so go to www.crucial.com

I think I want to do such a nice build because I am kind of bummed at how fast my rig is going out of date and I guess I should next time go big or go home haha. The i7 rig was just an idea. What i really need is an ~$800 build with the best bang for the buck. and at least 1tb hdd. and as future proof as possible. this build was a little over budget which is why i asked for suggestions on pushing down the price. thanks for the input so far

I thought this computer was for your mom.

Why would your mom need a so called "future proof" rig? Photo editing does not get more system demanding like games do, build a budget rig (no need to build an $800 for photo editing I insist) and it will work for your mom for at least 3-4 years if photo editing is all she's gonna do in it.

That's just my 2 cents.

+1 You can build a perfectly good photo editing rig for around $400, a bit more if she wants a 1TB HD. :)

OK then! Give her a quad! :p

dont worry. i dont think she needs a quad. or an 800$ rig for that matter. more like a c2d and a cheap vid card and spend the rest of the money on hdd's and raid them haha so i guess my question is turning into do i go with the i7s or should I go with like a q9650 (price cuts)
