random computer shut down ?

For some reason my computer will sometimes shut off at random when browsing the internet, typing papers for class and whatnot. I scanned the computer and it has no viruses what so ever. Everything on the computer runs smoothly.

What could cause this?

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thank-you!

It might be a number of things, over heating, bad power supply, bad ram.

Does it give you any system faults before it shuts down?

Just recently my wifes system would just reboot for no reason, I replaced her power supply and it has worked since with no problems.

Like Paratwa said, it could be a lot of things. Was there something you changed on your computer before this started happening?

Also, does it go through the full shut-down process, or does it just turn off?

No it doesn't give any messages at all it just randomly restarts or w.e. but, it doesn't happen that often.

Is there anyway that I can check the PS or other components to diagnose the correct problem?

CDN- it just restarts itself.

Try disabling automatic restarts due to system failure (instructions below). That should promt you with a blue screen of death, when you get that write down the error, error codes, etc. and post them up on this thread.

1.

Click on Start and then Control Panel.

Tip: In a hurry? Type system in the search box after clicking Start. Choose System from the list of results and then skip to Step 4.
2.

Click on the System and Maintenance link.

Note: If you're viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Simply double-click on the System icon and proceed to Step 4.
3.

Click on the System link.
4.

In the task pane on the left, click the Advanced system settings link.
5.

Locate the Startup and Recovery area and click on the Settings button.
6.

In the Startup and Recovery window, locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart.
7.

Click OK in the Startup and Recovery window.
8.

Click OK in the System Properties window.
9.

You can now close the System window.
10.

From now on, when a problem causes a BSOD or another major error that halts the system, the PC will not automatically reboot. Rebooting manually will be necessary.

That's what my wife's system did, just rebooted with no warnings. Replacing the power supply fixed it.

There are also cheap PSU testers you can buy ($20 or so). I have one, but it did not tell me what was wrong with my wifes PSU, since it was an intermittent problem.
