Clean installing WinXP Home into a pc that ran Win2K for years. I ran Western digital data lifeguard tools to blow everything away and repartion the 80gig drive. Winxp installs and runs fine, that is untill I shut it down and off. upon rebooting up I'm given a choice Safe Mode, last known... etc. If I choose any or leave it alone, it will reboot and do same all the time and every time. It will run excellent as long as it's kept turned on.
I've installed all versions of windows from Win3.1, win3.11, win95, winNT,win98 and SE, winME,win2kPro, and finially winXpPro and home over the years into various pc's. I'm at A lost this time.

As a first step, try choosing the "Last Known Good Configuration" option. If that doesn't help, once booted:
  • Open My Computer
  • Right click on the "Local Disk (C:)" icon, and choose the "Properties" option.
  • On the tools tab, click the "Check Now" button in the "Error-checking" section.
  • In the "Check Disk" dialog that opens, check both check boxes and press "Start".
  • A dialog will open, asking you to restart your computer. Choose the "Yes" option.
  • Reboot your computer.
  • When it starts up again, it should say "Checking file system on C:". Wait for each stage to finish.
  • Your computer will reboot itself when it finishes.

Good luck!

TIM did as you said, it did as you wrote, it rebooted and gave no message's. i assume it's ok in that respect.
I had tried to download windows upgrade advisor from MS. It was supposed to be alink for winxp compatability upgrading from older versions of windows ( ie win98,2k upgrding to XP) but MS only has upgrade advisor for Vista now. kinda a way to make us purchase newer OS.

Anyhow right now its running fine but worries start when it's shut down.

NOT SURE AT THIS POINT IF ITS A MOBO,HD, OR BIOS issue with Xp and the pc, I'm currently reinstalling original OS (win2kPro) that ran fine for years. I'll see how that goes in, run it for a while then do the WinXp upgrade route. THEN I should confirm it may be a pc hardware compatability issue with XP. Just a quirk

Update

I disconneted the 80gig HD and connected a 6gigHD I have. I loaded Xp on the 6gig and it's running GREAT. I shut it off 6 times now and when I start it up...................NO PROBLEMS :D:D:D

mY NEXT AND LAST move is to try a DOS XCOPY into the 80gigHD. I've done this before like 4 years ago LOL I know the hardware master, slave and so on but little rusty on dos switch commands. How does this sound?

XCOPY C:\*.* D:\*.* /A /C /H /E /V /Y where C is the gigHD and D is the 80gigHD

Why

How is it when I run the hard drive program for specificly for the hard drive (western Digital Data Lifguard Tools) and partition the 80gig hard drive into 1 80gig partition, when I finnially get back into windows (on the 6gig) and see the other drive, it ONLY SHOWS AS A 31gig HD??? And yet the SAME computer saw ALL 80gig when it ran Win2k.

I THINK THE DRIVE IS GOING:confused::confused:
