Give up on Windows?

I just inserted my USB drive on my netbook and it got a virus! I must have used the drive on a public computer.
The virus created exe files in each folder with the name of the folder it was in. After installing Kaspersky AntiVirus and cleaning the computer, important system files got quarantined and the computer does not start :)
I get the Acer wall paper and the Windows xp login box does not appear :D

I am going mad with Windows. Is there a solution to this (Except format).

Or should I give up on Windows ??

Maybe not a format or system recovery if there is data you need on the laptop?

Run a windows repair by booting off your windows cd this will replace the system files and get you up again, do you know how to do this?

Also if your looking for a Windows alternative I use Ubuntu Linux exclusively and I have never looked back since i changed.

You don't have to change your Windows operating system because of a virus - it takes only practice and "Common Sense 2009" to avoid them.
In your case, I would reinstall Windows.
Switching to another OS is also possible though... Like DeskAssist, I made the switch to Linux, but I do not encourage people to do the same if they're current OS they are using provides the features they want.

System Recovery gives you the option to put Windows back to it's original state WITH your data still there or a clean format.

Use your system recovery disk.

The Acer aspire one (Netbook) has no Recovery DVD. Instead there is a eRecovery software in XP (which is corrupted) :)

Windows Repair sounds good.... :)

Well, I do have a lot of common sense. This is the first time I have got a virus in 10+ years of Windows usage.

I also have a Mac (which is definitely better). Thats the reason why I am planning to completely switch from Windows.

Windows does not start (even in Safe mode). So I guess Windows repair is the solution....

If you have a backup of your data then reinstall, if not you're screwed.

I'd install OSx86 or Ubuntu if I was looking to switch from Windows.

Getting a Virus can happen on Windows,Mac or Linux.

I personally install an OS then VMware or VirtualBox (free) with Sandboxie inside the Virtual Machine, this prevents a Virus,Spyware,Ad-aware or Malware from infecting the main OS.

I also install Linux or Windows on a USB flash drive, as a backup or recovery option.

There are no viruses for OS X, only trojan horses, which need to user to give them admin access before you do anything, they can't replicate on their own and start screwing with the system without authorisation from the user. That's the key.

The first Virus for the Mac OS was detected in 2006 called "OSX/Leap-A", I could get in to the hole 'Virus,Worm,Trojan Horse' argument but that's for another thread. All I will say is the MAC OS is no safer in some respects to Windows/Linux. It's also child's play to create a virus to take control of the MAC's Admin rights, I first showed that "proof of concept" at smoocon 2005 ;)

Anyway, back to this threads topic...

Link or it didn't happen LOL, hopefully it's one of those times when you can say that. Usually in the New OS Leopard it's virtually impossible to get a virus if it needs access to Libary/System as it requires a input password then again does applications you install. Saying that Macs do get viruses due to becoming more popular in the College market so if your a Naughty Pirater you get spanked when you download iWork 09 as it has a startup trojan but is disguised along with iWork 09 and currently 20,000> Have been affected. Also I believe the same virus is in Photoshop CS4 Pirated

If you have a norton software setup disk, insert it as soon as your computer starts, it will then start system recovery. remember to hit enter on boot from cd, and if none of that works use your recovery disk.

Kaspersky cleaned the virus. The virus had entered system files so Kaspersky even cleaned the system files and the OS does not start at all, as the system files are cleaned up :D

I'm going with OSX86 !

Cool! I can't talk about it on this forum because it's a bit of a gray area but I'm gonna be doing a OSx86 install too next week or this weekend.

I finally finished installing Leopard on my netbook and its great!! :)

All I need now is a WiFi fix. Looking for drivers.......
