Old memory

Hi Everyone,

I've just joined.

I have a box full of memory cards from the older (1998 ?) computers.

Each time I try to upgrade the memory on my museum piece pentium II it will only recognise 32 Mb. but I've installed two 128megs. getting me down a bit.
I wondered if there is any way I would be able to recognise the different types of memory in my box, in that way I would know they are compatible with each other, they are all mixed up at the moment.

Not making much sense, but it is some indication of my limited knowledge.

Thanks,

Pantyvest

More information Needed! :)

What operating system?

98'?
ME?
XP?

What service pack?

By the sounds of it, your using a service pack / operating system that does not support more than 32 megabytes of ram?

Or.

Some OLD motherboards have a BIOs option of limiting the ram reconised to 32 MB

Search your Bios first for the option of limiting ram

It may simply be a limitation of old hardware. I had an old P2 machine that would go crazy with 256MB sticks and only accepted 128MB ones at max; similarly, another old machine of mine (K6-2) would only recognize half of the capacity of certain sticks.

it just seem you need a new computer.....

Gah. . . I hate posts like this. . .

Not everyone can afford to have the Biggest and Best.

Surely you would know that running just the basics in computer components. (As do I)

However, back to problem, if you would like to use the computer for like just a spare to play solitare on :), which alot of the older PC's are best for, then that computer sounds ideal :)

However, due to the ram, the computer will be unbearably slow...

Like said before, some ram sticks just disagree. Its been a problem with RAM Sticks for years. . .

Thanks for the memory

Hi,

Thanks to every one who replied to my infantile question.

I am running four PC's at the moment, but the one in question is my museum piece which has 48meg of simms. There are two empty slots for dimms and I thought I would take out the simms and put in dimms. Am I confusing you ? But I have a box full of Dimms I want to try to sort out. I was told that there is a way of telling the difference between say pc100 and other types of old memory and hoped some one could give me a bit of guidance,

However.... I am very grateful for your replies, so thanks once again.
