I have an 80gb HD that i used for all my pictures and music and i think it died on me:confused:
One day i booted my pc up and it wouldnt boot so i took the HD out and it booted fine!! I show some numbers in bios on SATA 1.
I'm not sure what is wrong. The HD is about 3 years old.

I was told to get a SATA USB connector and see if that works?

Any thoughts or idea's?

I have pics from all the way back to 04 on there:(

If the computer will not boot, Google how to fix your Master Boot Record

If your computer WILL boot but cannot see it in windows, Go Start -> Right click my computer -> Manage -> Disk Management and tell me what you see in there....

ok so i done what you said. I hooked up the HD once the computer booted and i seen nothing. My computer will NOT boot with the HD hooked up. It will boot fine with it un-hooked. For some reason i see my G drive as a cd drive now and before the G drive was my HD.
I think the HD is fine though. I here a tiny beep and here a fan come on when it is hooked up.
I also here a click noise and then air coming from the MoBo once i hook it up. It's like a click and for a second you here air it seems like.
Any idea's?

Just for your own knowledge, a computers hard drive must be connected prior to the computer being Powered on.

The Hard drive will not automatically reconize if the PC is already on and you correct it.

A Hard Drive, (IDE, SATA, SataII) Is NOT plug and Play (like a USB mouse ect),

Are the "Jumpers/Shunts" on the back of the hard drive with the data you would like to recover set to "Slave"?

Check your hard drive physically for your jumpers/shunts and ensure that it is set to slave.

This means that if your computer has two "Master" Jumpers/shunts then the comptuer will cancel out one or both of the harddrives resulting in an error.. .

I am not sure how to check that. Should there be like a switch or something?
What i think is happening is, the cd drive is coming on as a G drive and the HD is trying to be a G drive as well and maybe they are conflicting so the computer won't boot? I only have one other HD which is set as a 25gb/275gb partition

When you say it will not boot what does that mean? Do you see any error messages? Does it beep at all? The drive letter mapping doesn't matter at this point.

I get all the way to the Windows loading screen and right after that, it turns black and nothing. I let it sit for like an hour and it just stayed black. I am not getting any errors or out of the normal beeps etc..

I was told to buy a SATA to USB connection, should i buy this? Its only like 14 bucks on ebay and comes with a power cable to power the HD.
Anyone know why he asked me to try this?

He would of asked you to try that because it may let the computer boot without looking for the boot record on the hard drive that is "broken"

I would give it a try, However, again you owuld have to have it plugged in before you turn your PC on, It might work, it might not, but its well worth a try. . .

It will also help you work out if its the hard drive that is completely Stuffed or not. . .

If windows starts to load I would lean to it being a corruption issue or something not necessarily a dying drive.

If you have a second PC, if you put the drive in it can you access all the data on it?

alright, the thing is, I don't have another desktop to try it on. If i buy that USB connection, can i try it on a lap top? Will it be the same thing?

The idea is to test it on a system that can boot into windows so that you know that your windows install isn't what is screwed up.
