So I decided to build another LGA775 system: E8500

I picked up an ASUS P5Q Pro mobo for 70 bucks+ shipping, some G.Skill DDR21066 for about 32 shipped and an E8500 from a jevery, a good guy on here, for 100 shipped. As the story goes, I have 3 HD3870's laying around, so I put one of them in for now (later I will get another good PSU and run a pair) to see what this thing would do. I'm on one of the old stock coolers (the thicker ones with copper, not just all aluminum) for the core2duo's and this is my first result:

I haven't tried to do anything with it yet, but later I will pick up another PSU and a decent CPU cooler to see if I can get 5 GHz on air.

Thats gonna be pretty sick. You should get a nice heatsink for your CPU. :D

I'm not sure what I want to do with it. I may replace the TRUE on my i7 with a copper TRUE or something else and pass it down to the E8500. Right now I'm looking at a prolimatech megalems (not sure if I spelled it right) that goes for about 60 bucks.

Don't have too high hopes of 5ghz yet, because it looks like you'll be really limited on that mobo and maybe the chip as well. That is not that great of a benching board, and that CPU voltage is decent, but nothing too spectacular. Good luck though!

P.S- What's the VID of that chip?

Not sure what a VID is. Can you explain what it is to me?

As for 5 GHz, that's my goal. I hit 4.68 GHz on my old C0-stepping E8400, so I figure this E0-stepping E8500 will be a little better at clocking. I will see what is possible later on when I have time. Right now I'm getting my last homework ready to email to the teacher along with preparing for my last test ever in school. Graduation is May 16th, I can't wait!

btw, if the mobo limits me, I still have access to the mobo I run 4.68 GHz on and also a Gigabyte EP45-Extreme that is waiting for some action.

It's the stock vcore for the chip. The lower the better, obviously. Core temp will tell you the chip's VID.

nice for a stock cooler. lol. Did you prime it yet? :p

Ah ok I'll check it out later. I will probably wait until I get my new PSU and a good CPU heatsink before doing extensive testing. My PC&P 750W Silencer and TRUE are doing their duties on the i7 build at the moment, which is crunching at 100% for World Community Grid 24/7.

That is a really good mobo. I have the SE2 and the thing (as the company states) is rock solid. What voltage do you have your northbridge set at?

Well, glad to see the 8500 got a good home. You’ve already surpassed my SuperPi score for the chip I replaced the 8500 with. Best for the 9650 so far is 11.4 @ 4.2 so doesn’t look like I’ll be able to best your current score. Still struggling with the cooler for the new chip and unable to run benchmarks over 4.0 without bumping about 65c. Got a Xigmatek Dark Knight on the way and got my second 4870 to CrossFire from Newegg today so it’ll be interesting to compare 3Dmark scores when we get our rigs sorted out. Good Luck in your quest for 5.0! :)

this thing overclocks effortlessly

When I have time I'll see what it can do with an aftermarket CPU cooler. For now it is doing well with the OEM c2d cooler.

Is that run at a 4.0 OC?

yes. I'm going to wait until I get a better CPU cooler before I explore the limits of the CPU. So far 4.5 GHz is what I would call the "safe" limit for posting and booting into windows without the temps getting too high for my taste. At the current settings on 4.0, the rig will Wprime for a while, so I am happy with that with the stock CPU cooler.

Definitely, the two Red Desert scenes would probably kick in thermal protection or melt something at 4.5 with the stock cooler. You should be able to get at least 1000 more points when you can run it at 4.4 or more at 4.5 with a better cooler. :good: Luck.
