Hey guys, I will be getting a water cooler for my PC next week. I want to take a few statistics to see how popular and reliable they are. Thanks guys.

well, I don't know how much action you'll get in this thread, but it completely depends on what you are using it for and the quality of the components you use, and if you actually set it up right.

Hmm well i think decent watercooling kits these days are expensive,I would rather put the money towards a high end air cooler.

Ive seen a few articles on other forums who have gone from air cooling to watercooling and they said that their temps was not all that better, certianly not worth the cost anyway.

I think most people choose to go with watercooling for the silent part more than anything, but thats my opinion.

Even if you watercool, you still have the "whirr" of the pump(s)
and your psu fan spinning.

And the ever wonderful threat of a leak, and the possible destruction of all of your high end components going up in smoke.

Mostly hardcore benchmarkers go for watercooling as it's overkill for most mainstream users. Just not necessary.

Watercooling is best, but only if you build your own system and dont use one of those "kits", most kits are utter rubbage to begin with. Im running air at the moment though, not enough budget to go to water.

the problems with water cooling are as follows:
1) maintenance and installation are a pain
2) expensive
3) only marginally better cooling performance

my biggest gripe with watercooling, is that it sucks the value out of overclocking. its usually better to spend $350 more on your processor and get a $50 heatsink then to spend $400 on a watercooling setup.

well not always, especially when nowadays quadcores overclock much further, sometimes far enough that air cant handle them. The i7 920 and 975 probably clock somewhat similar on air, due to the amount of heat they put out. But get water, and you would see the 975 clock somewhat further most of the time.

air cooling, peace of mind is the main reason, with air cooling it can't leak all over your system and knacker it up.

Also, i can't afford water cooling, and even if i could i wouldn't, takes up too much room, too fiddly and the extra money isn't worth it for hardly any temp difference and only a little quieter, especially when you only wear headphones and have no speakers, then you can't even hear the system anyway

Air FTW, iv looked at the temps people with water cooling post...I can easily get close to it on air. I'm at like 38c at 4 gighertz, and under load never gets over 56c. Water cooling just isn't worth it. To me its just a novelty item. It looks pretty cool too.

lol, i hade my q6600 overclocked to 3.6ghz and was idle at 19oC...

the main reason people stay away from liquid cooling isnt because it doesnt cool much more than air its because of the cost.

only time air cooling is close to liquid cooling temps is if the liquid cooling kit is not very good quality (pre-built kit)!

i aint no fan boy its frustrating to hear all this talk "its not much better"

if so then why do people use liquid cooling systems to cool the hot side of peltiers (tec)? why not use a cpu fan? because air cooling/heatsinks cant get rid of enough heat quick enough!

air cooling is good for pc's does its job and water cooling is expensive, each to there own

I think if you put it to price/performance air comes out on top. At the end of the day the water is cooled by air anyway. I understand that because water is a denser medium it may draw heat away a little better and your temps will not fluctuate as much as air, but it just costs to much for the little bit of performance you get compared to quality air cooling.

i thought that water cooling when it came out would be noise free and more solid state cooling, but it still has heatsinks and fans....completely pointless....

This may be true, but I said price/performance. The little bit of gains you get is not worth the price.
Little? Its not a little gain going from air to water, for one the rad can be outside the case which means cooler air. Other factors include more area and more effecient area to remove heat from, heatpipes can only be so effective, unlike water which is in a continuous loop.

yeh pointless lol... thats why cars etc use liquid cooling!

solid state cooling would only be possible with a solid state pump, would like to know of a pump with no moving parts
