Second hard drive advice

Hello,

I am building a computer with the following specs:

Antec p182
4GB Corsair Memory (PC 6400)
E8400
Asus P5Q-E
750W Corsair PSU
1TB Samsung Spinpoint (for media)
Radeon4850 Graphics Card

I need a hard drive for my OS and Programmes and would like to avoid the expensive SSD and Raptor hard drives. I have looked around and it seems the best alternative would be a second 1TB Samsung Spinpoint (though Western Digital Caviar Black has been suggested as an alternative).

Do you think that 1. It would be a waste of money to buy a 1TB hard drive just for the Operating System and Programmes - I don't really play games, so much of the space is never really going to be used 2. I have heard that placing the Operating System on such a large hard drive is actually a bad idea (though am not sure why) - is this true? If so should I partition, to say leave just 100GB free for the OS and the rest for programmes?

Would be really grateful for your comments and suggestions for any alternatives.

Why do you need a second hard drive? If are already going to buy a 1tb???

I would get a second TB and partition it like you said. As for brand that is up to you, I have both Samsung and WD and both have served me well.

Because for some people even 2TB is not enough...

Second hard drive query

The second hard drive is my media file - loads of digital camera footage and other irreplaceable stuff. I always stick my operating system and programmes on a separate hard drive, so I can do a reinstall every so often. Also runs a bit faster, though probably not significantly.

Would be really grateful for your comments on the first hard drive.

Hard Disk dilemma

Sorry, misread your reply.

So you think it is bad to have just the OS running on a Hard Disk that is too big?

Do you think I should create two partitions on the hard drive and stick the operating system on one and programmes on the other or have both on the first partition. Also, what size do think would be adequate partition size?

If its irreplaceable data to you then i wouldnt keep it just on that one hard drive, just incase it ever fails

But what i would do in your situation is buy a 1TB drive as storage,And a 250Gb drive for everything else such as your os,apps etc :)

Or see if you can pick up a second hand Raptor on ebay.

$69.99...Buy it now option too.

But if your not a gamer then i dont see why you would realy need that sort of speed hard drive.
