X-Box Overheat Problems

Hey Guys!
My X-Box 360 has taken a turn for the worse. It has been overheating consistently for quite some time. It gets worse over time. Usually i can get one game of COD WAW before it overheats, sometimes i can't get any games in. I bought my Xbox from Walmart and got their 3 year warranty plan. I have called them 5 times, each time they "fixed" it. It would work great for a week, then the fan gets loud and overheats. They send it to a repair place called Asurion in Tennessee. What should my next step be? Call xbox? has anyone fixed their overheating problem themselves?

I've fixed my two Xboxs before, I'm currently working on my second one by replacing the clamps, thermal paste, and the exhaust fans. It's easy if you know what you're doing, and I don't recommend sending it to MS, but that's just my opinion.

They are not fixing it. They are probably just giving you the run around or doing a quick fix. It's best to get the extended warranty from MS, atleast they'll replace your console for a newer one. With Walmart warranties, they just keep giving you your same xbox without it being fully fixed. I wouldn't be surprised if you end up with the red ring of death.

Fixing it youself is the way to fix an xbox, either that or just call microsoft and complain to them. If that dont work, file a BBB complain against walmart.

the most successful method I have seen is to replace the X-clamps with actual screws and put some Arctic Silver on the GPU and CPU. I did that to mine after it started crashing after about an hour of play. I replace the clamp and put some AS5 on the chips, the next day I had the Xbox playing Halo 3 for a solid 4 hours. I've also done the same with a friends Xbox and his is working fine as well. I don't know where to get the guide I used. I just downloaded a pdf guides off of a torrent site since I didn't want to buy the commercial kits that just included things you can find at Home Depot or Lowes. The guide I used had part numbers for both stores so you could go buy the correct parts at Lowes or Home Depot.

Chaning the x-Clamp is just a temp fix it will never be a permanent fix, adding some as5 might be a good start, and exhaust fans if they are bad replace but if they arent then i wouldnt worry about it, if u really wanna attempt in stopping the over heat, i know that some people have bought servers HSF's cuz they are flatter and smaller in size and used them in the 360

Dont send to Asurion

The procedures that Asurion takes will only harm you console. They do preform the screw mods but they do not run the so called 16 point inspection that they claim. When your unit arrives it is checked by a "tech" then that tech either "fixes it" or makes the decision to send it back to you so you can send it to Microsoft. The procedures with the RROD or E74 are the same. They disassemble the unit. They were placing 951 flux under the GPU and CPU but now are using a rosin based flux. The rosin flux can and will destroy your unit. Its sticky residue that is left behind will build up dust and debris eventually rendering your unit unrepairable. Once the flux is place under the gpu and cpu they heat it with a heat gun. This has two ill effects. One it cause board warp that breaks solder joints under the processors. Two, excessive heat will destroy the structure of the processors. They know that this is happening, but have refused to stop. If your unit works after reassembly they do a small test on it 5 to 10 minutes of game play then it is sent back to you.

The main goal is to have your system work for atleast 90 days at which point if it need to be sent back in the company gets paid again. Its all about money in the end and not your satisfaction. Asurion is not a register repair facility and have made it known that they do not want to be. The parts that they use are 3rd party remanufactured plants from china. These units would not even pass a novice inspection. Mainboard and drive come in with wire soldered to the board. These wire can catch fire. If I was you I would demand your money back and if they do not return it report them to the BBB.
