im having issues with file quality when i convert files from dvd format to avi or mpeg2 format. the picture is crystal clear when the file is in dvd but after i convert it to avi or mpeg2 it becomes slightly pixelated. what would cause this and what can i do to fix it?

This would be due to a low bitrate at certain frames of the video.

Two solutions instantly spring to mind:
1) Encode from DVD to higher bitrate
2) When encoding to MPEG-2 use 'multi-passes' and 'VBR' to distribute the bitrate better

ok.. i was actually incorrect in saying that the problem occured in the conversion from dvd to avi or mpeg2 - its actually when i convert from either format to wmv. i had a feeling your bitrate solution was unilateral, so i tried transfering at a higher bitrate (10 mbps) and the quality increased dramatically. thanks for the help. any ideas on what the best media converter for video conversions (mpeg2 or avi to wmv) would be? quality freeware is nice but ill pay for a decent converter.

thanks

ur better just searching one for urself and comparing them because different programs suite different personal needs...try download.com and search for keywords like mpeg2 to wmv... etc.. it'll give u list of programs.. its a really good site.. the new website upgrade is kinda annoying since they took out certain things n added certain useless things..

One of the easiest methods for DVD->avi (XviD) would be using Auto Gordian Knot (guide here).

For DVD->MPEG-2, well, take a look here, my person preference of the two methods listed there is DVD2SVCD, and while it says that it requires one of two programs which aren't free, the latest versions support QuEnc, a free encoder.

I dunno about .wmv conversion I don't use that very much :)
