do you think i should get a blu-ray drive as they have really dropped in price, blu-ray writers are still expensive also the discs, will games ever be made for blu-ray also are monitors and graphics cards HD ready for blu-rays

It's really up to you. I usually don't watch movies on my computer, so having a blu-ray drive would be a bit of a waste. But if you think you'd watch them, go for it.

As for games...well how many games do you see on multiple DVDs? That's going to be the real factor, seeing as (as far as I know) most games are still on single disks. Once it becomes cheaper to put games on one blu-ray disk over a couple DVDs, then I could see them making the conversion.

As for GPUs and monitors, well it depends if you want full playback. of course if you have a monitor that can fix 1280x720 or 1920x1080 on the screen, then you're fine. MOst GPUs have hardware MPEG2 depcompression and most current computers can manage MPEG4 without much of a problem (some cards might have hardware MPEG4 decompression...)

well its your choice but I do not think its worth it at the moment, you should wait a few years and then decide.

Hope this helps *

IT really is up to you. I have two in two different computers but I use them regularly to play movies. There are some considerations that you need to resolve before you decide to go to one.

1) What will you be watching it on? If you decide to purchase one then you should have a monitor that is able to play back at least 720P (1280x720). Some newer 21" LCD's can achieve that and all of the newer 24 inch and above LCD's can achieve 1080P (1920X1080). You will need a graphics card that is able to reproduce HD video and if it's a newer card then it probably will. Your playback hardware will have to be HDCP ready or even if it is capable of playing Blu-Ray it won't, but that can be overcome with a copy of AnyDVD HD. If you can get all of that in place and you have a decent monitor then the experience is really quite rewarding.

I would only get a blu-ray drive when they become cheaper and have better speeds. You never know, they may already be creating something better than blu-ray considering how fast technology advances these days.

At the moment bluray is pretty much just used for movies, there's no use for it in computing. It's easier cheaper and keeps the market available to more people if game manufacturers release their games on DVDs. Maybe the next time you update your optical drive it would be wise to go with bluray.
If you want to say to all your friends about how your computer is so awesome that is has a bluray player, then go for it.
If you're going to be buying bluray movies, just buy an actual bluray player. Chances are you have a pretty decent TV to watch them on and you would choose that over your computers monitor anyway.

Hopefully it wont be a disk. Maybe usb 3 thumb drives of some sort.

Also, I feel its definitely worth it if you have it hooked up to a 50" plasma if your family room, but otherwise I dont see when you'd use it. Also, look at the reviews. They commonly break. I'd only go LG, but they are about $100.

depends what grapihics card and monitor you have most newer ones support hd you'll have to check yourself or post up what you already have
games may one day be made for blu ray some point in the future but it will probably be quite a while as most games dont need that much space by the time this happens blu ray drives will be very cheap
i use ps3 for blu rays it is good to watch but a bit pointless for me as dvds are much cheaper but it is fun to watch action movies in hd but i probably wouldn't be as good without a big screen to watch it on tho
