what the title states, i already ordered Phenom2 X3 720 2,8Ghz black edition for which amounts to 130 dollars including shipping, but i just found a Phenom2 X4 945 3,0Ghz black edition that i can get shipped for free for 140 dollars. should i take the 945 instead? i have only gaming in mind.

The only thing to consider is if you send the Phenom II 720 Tri-Core Processor back they are likely going to charge you a 15 percent restocking fee. I would just stick with what you bought rather than lose the 15 percent.

If the OP bought from newegg, and you call and explain things 99% of the time the restocking fee is waived. Or you can refuse delivery, in which case there is no restocking fee.

Really depends, but they dont make a 945BE. There is a 940 AM2+/955/965BE. If its a 945 125W I would just as soon have the 720, probably will unlock and clock better. If its a 945 95W its a toss up. If its a 945 C3, I would take the 945 C3.

What motherboard do you have? You can try to unlock the 720 first, if it unlocks to a quad that will save you the time, shipping costs, etc.

Honestly the 720 is a decent gaming CPU, you probably won't have any bottle neck there for awhile. What Graphics card do you have?

Although I'd check the model if I were you... add another $40 for AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition

Why bother with a 965 when a C3 955 clocks the same for $20 less-

If you already order it, just keep it. Mine clocks to 3.2ghz per core, stock volts, and can go as high as 3.9ghz totally stable on all three. there's a chance your 4th core is usable to at least some extent too. for gaming, my 4850 is the bottleneck to my 720 currently. i'd just keep it, wait a bit until something new comes out.

If it will cost you extra to ship the 720 back/restocking fees, etc., I'd say just keep the 720. If not, get the 945.
