Advice on overclocking Phenom II X4 965 BE

System is nearly complete, just waiting for the final component, CPU (thank you JoeSamo) and was planning on overclocking a little bit.

Here are the components I have at the moment.

CPU: Read Title
CPU COOLER: CORSAIR Cooling Hydro Series CWCH50-1 120mm High Performance CPU Cooler
MB: GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard
PSU: Diablotek PHD750 Power Supply - 750W, ATX
MEMORY: OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) NOTE! I onl;y have 2GB of this at the moment!
GPU: PNY VCGGTX260CXPB GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896MB 448-bit GDDR3

My questions are:
1. How good is the motherboard for OC'ing?
2. Should I go through BIOS or just use AMD Overdrive?
3. How much could I increase voltage on CPU while keeping it stable do you guys think?
4. What is the main difference between increasing multiplier and increasing frequency?
5. Are there other things I am forgetting?

Thank you

The motherboard is decent but you may be limited if you have the 140watt 965.
Bios.
Depends on the chip, I've had chips that hate anything over 1.475 and Ive had chips that scale all the way up to 1.775. But 1.55 should be your max.
The multi increases the cpu frequency only whereas the htt frequency influences your ram nb and ht clock speeds aswell.
Yeah probably, you will find out when you come to it :p

Nah, it's the 125watt version, the CS3 model I believe.

So I should be able to reach 3.8-3.9 without any major issues?

I'd just bump it by multiplier, start at 3.2ghz and stock volts, see how stable it is, if it's good, go to 3300, etc, until it won't work, then toss the volts up a notch (1.38 to say 1.41) and continue. i'd expect a 3.9ghz oc total, like 1.5 v probably.
make sure to keep your ram loose, don't oc ram until after you have the cpu (don't tighten timings or increase speed that doesn't correlate to the htt)

SO I MADE A TYPO, DEAL WITH IT.
We all make mistakes.
Your mother's dealt with her the exact amount of minutes you happen to be old.
You can deal with mine the length of this thread.

Make sure your bios is updated or your overclocks will not be stable and you will not be able to reach very far with it...

You should be able to increase the multi straight to 19x and run it at 3.8ghz with stock 1.4vcore... turn off Cool&Quiet... and I would use the bios to overclock then maybe AMD Overdrive, prime95, or Everest to run a stability test while monitoring the temps.. keep it under 60C...

4ghz @ 1.475 - 1.5 vcore 20x multi

I wish I had the C3 965 I can only get to 3.9, I've been so close to 4Ghz stable, SOOO close but I just couldn't keep it there. :( Good Luck with yours.

@Leopold

What is your stock vcore on the c2 965 140w..?? 1.45..??

*edit* Where is your NB and HTT frequency set at..??

Yeah, 3.9ghz is all I could get from a c2 I had but I ran it at 3.8ghz because of the vcore jump... and I was using air..

When AMD releases the new 890 chipset hopefully the NB frequency will overclock higher on the AM3 cpu's..

Just 2 or 3 more days and i will use all the advice given.

BTW, where is a good source to update the BIOS? Just go to Gigabyte's webpage?

Yup, it's really slow tho so be grateful I have it bookmarked.
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=3096#anchor_os F6A is the one for you ;)

@ Mitch, chill out. I really should of bought sarcmark  on the other hand we don't want him to go under-clocking and find it unstable now do we?

I only need to download the most current (F6A), correct? All the other updates will be included in that one? Or do I need to download all?

EDIT: Just saw that you wrote that F6A is the one for me. Thanks.

Does anyone here have more than 4GHz on 965BE and running stable?

After some research on the web, not many reviewers have achieved this. Makes me wonder if I am willing to try it.

I would like to see what you are able to acheive at 3.8ghz and 4ghz before I can direct you what overclock you need... but I think I have a nice chip and I am able to run at 4.2ghz stable... not sure if this is the same way for everybody... even though I have modded my cpu (lapped) and heatsink with a PWM 130cfm fan...
