Installing OS

Got a question for someone who knows a little bit about installing operating systems. Might make me sound kinda dumb cause everyone probably knows lol... But If I have a windows vista home premium CD but no product key for it, but have a product key on the sticker on my laptop that I bought for home premium, can I use that product key to install the operating system on another PC?

Hi jay1992,

I think that will work! If you are going to to install Windows Vista HP and use the product key that is on the sticker of your laptop to another PC. The installation will push through however there might be a validation problem that you are going to encounter in the future. But there is no harm in trying, right?

Thanks,

Re

No, you cannot use the product key to install the operating system on another PC. It is not validated key.

similar problem

My e machines computer also came with a vista full version disk, supposedly to upgrade the computer from the XP loaded on it. I too did not get a key and although the vista loads fine it will not verify. My pleading to gateway, who makes e machines, have been ignored. I wonder if someone in the loop is taking these keys for some other purpose.

Yes, you can easily use product for same operating system, so your laptop product key easily use to another computer.

So I can take the Windows Vista Home Premium DVD that belongs to my uncle, make a copy onto a blank DVD, and be able to use the product key that is on my laptop for the same OS onto another computer? Also, the case that my uncle has the Windows Vista DVD in also has the product key that he got when he bought the OS. Should I write that product key down? Or is it not usable? Because I think he used it on multiple computers.

product key is a product key to my knowledge different product keys can be used on the same disc however i believe each product only allows for the os to be installed a certain amount times before windows activation will say that it is unable to activate the product.
but as strangehold said you may have a problem using oem product keys on retail
if you write down your product key from your uncle that would be illegal as you did not purchase the key and are using it elsewhere.

Well I have a product key for the same OS on a sticker that is on my laptop. I never received and OS disk when I bought the laptop. It came pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium but I didn't have a disk for the OS. So my uncle said I could copy his... And I also wanted to install the OS on another desktop I have which has XP and I was wondering if I could still use the product key on my laptop on another pc.

It wont activate in my knowledge. So that means you wont be able to install important updates. There is no need to install it with this key because your PC will be vulnerable to viruses if you cant get the important updates from Microsoft.
