How to get windows key without windows working?

Hi,

Tomorrow my friend is bringing his laptop to me to re install windows as something wont let it start up (probably a virus as he does not have a anti virus and clicks banners on the net etc)

The only problem we have is that he has lost the key as he brought xp seperatly. Is it possible to find the key if we boot up the computer in ubuntu using the run off cd option?

thanks

p.s. just found out where the key is, in the registry, but does anyone know of a program that i will open the registry in ubuntu that will work when running it off the cd?

If you can just export the reg key, then use a text editor on ubuntu. I hope you're not doing anything stupid. The owner should know better than to lose his cd key

If the comp originally came with XP then the key would be on the sticker on the bottom of the comp.

When he brought the laptop he brought a oem xp cd seperatly and never stuck the sticker on.

Does wine come on the cd trial? do you have to copy the registry or something?

thanks

edit: when i look at the product id in regedit on my computer i get loads of number and not the key, is there a way of converting it?

Hi,
Find Windows XP Product Key from the Windows XP CD:

1) Insert Windows XP cd into a working computer.
2) Exit the Autorun introduction.
3) Open "My Computer"
4) Right Click on the Windows XP cd-rom drive and select explore.
5) Open the USWXP32P_ZX folder.
6) Open the sysprep folder.
7) Open unattend.txt

Your CD's product key is contained within the unattend.txt file.

Thanks
