fixing my internet speed

Hej,

Since a week or so, our Internet has dropped to a max of 80 kbps i called our isp and they told me there was something wrong with the wiring in my house. I've bought a new phone line splitter and now the Internet is at 400 kbps but not our usual 700-800. i called the isp again and they told me i had to move my modem as closer to where the phone line enters our house. i have a 40 cm line between it now. but still nothing changed. who can help me or have suggestions?

network setup:
phone line -- 30 cm chord -- our speed-touch 510 -- 8 meter network cable -- linksys WRT54GL -- 5 meter network cable -- my PC

our isp told me the network cables work different than that short chord from me phone line to the modem and that they will barely reduce the speed.

Thanks

Eliminate the components part by part. Try and get hold of a ethernet patch lead and connect a seperate computer or laptop directly to your ADSL modem. If the slow speeds persist, contact your ISP. Of course check the obvious things aswell like the security on your wireless router, perhaps someone else is draining the bandwidth.

i take it you used to tested a 700-800 using speedchecker.com or similar did u constantly get this or only check it once or twice as internet speed can very massive during the day and week. if u haven’t change your wiring, adding anything or moved the pc or modem and so on then i can’t see a reason why it would be your end tbh.

since you bought a new phone line splitter (microfilter we call them) the speed has improved i see
if you are using an 8Mb max connection im sure your aware that the you will probably never achieve the full 8 Mb

it sounds like the phone splitter may have been causing the problem and causing an intermittent connection and on dsl max lines this will be detected by the exchange as a problem and will attempt to lower the speed/sync rate to a suitable stable speed.
if im right in a few days the speed may jump back up as the line stablises,
if this does not happen (as in my case) and you will have to call your isp to reset you ip profile (also called bras profile on bt wholesale lines), it may have a different name in your country,
which means the exchange will start to recalcute the max speed your line can take (in the uk this takes around 10 days but you should see something in 2-3 days)

it may also be worth saying that unless (in my case anyway) you hit the tech support with some good knowledge about this they will run through pointless diagnostic tests that will may get you the right answer or they just say its your fault.
