During the weekdays its slow so I need something to kill time...was gonna get a cheap laptop...but then the ipad came out...the mall has WiFi and since I work most of the time I wouldn't need 3g...

I have a desk top at home which I use for a couple of hours when I get home and I also have a droid eris phone with a data plan..

What would you get..a 500 dollar entry laptop or a WiFi I pad..mainly for browsing...YouTube...and games...and maybe some ebook reading...though I've never read an ebook

ONly ting that worries me is the 16 gig part...may need 32

Someone chime in on this but I don't think you tube will work on the ipad since youtube is flash based.

That aside I personally would get a laptop, I think the ipad is a joke, i can see the usefulness of one but for $400-300 less.

You can do all of the things you want to do on a laptop and more. The ebook would be the downside to the laptop, you obviously could do it with the laptop but the ipad would be more comfortable.

Youtube actually is an app for the iPad. They have some deal with apple and it works. I can verify this, as I have an iPod touch. If you have a good computer at home and this is only to blow time at work, I would say get an iPad. There are thousands of games you can download. And a lot are free! But, if you need a new computer also, then I guess a laptop. But personally, I love my iPod Touch so much, I would love to get an iPad, since you can do basically anything on there that you could do on a laptop.

Flash just failed miserably at a flash web developer's conference last week in Seattle. It crashed Android every time it was launched. Perhaps, Jobs was on to something. Adobe needs to get their shit together, their apps have become very unstable the past few years and filled with DRM for licensing.

I don't know if it is going to happen for iPad, but some awesome developer is porting android to iPhone, so possibly for iPad? Maybe not. But you could try it, and if you don't like it, sell it later.

Hi there,

If you are looking for something small and portable to keep you busy, you should look into a netbook. The Dell Inspiron Mini 10 ($349) has a large keyboard, advanced wireless options, and great graphics. You'll be able to browse the internet, watch videos, and even easily type document if you need to!

What do you think?

I adore my asus netbook, too bad you cant rent an ipad i mean you already know what using a notebook is like... too bad you cant try out an ipad for a week or so to see if it is actually worth it or if you find yourself needing more.

An iPad can do just about anything. The only major limitation is flash. But other than that, I can use it for about anything.

Yeah it has VNC. I use it and it works really well. You can get the free one- I have it- or for slightly better features it is like 2.99

Actually, it has all three lol. But VNC is my favorite, just because I used it already, but I have tried out RDP and it works ok also.

Yeah it is outgoing. It has ssh once jail broken, and I have no idea if it has Telnet. I would imagine it does, but I really have no idea, as I can't use Telnet, so I haven't looked.

PS- If you get an iPod Touch/ iPad/ iPhone, jailbreak it.

well if it has ssh it probably has telnet...

and Im assuming it has usb and maybe an SD expansion on it to maybe save your files off of it or hook like a camera up to it or something?

There is no external memory available AFAIK. Someone will probably make some adapter, but there isn't a regular usb port or sd slot or anything. You can use the charger port to connect the iPad to the computer and hook up accessories. One accessory is a camera.

I'd go for a netbook every time. The only real advantage the iPad has over it is battery life, but even that isn't by much, if at all. You can actually even get a tablet netbook with a multi touch screen for $500.

I mean sure, you can do most things on an iPad that you can do on a netbbok, but they're all easier to do on the netbook. Who honestly wants to have 6 different apps with condensed pages to substitute for a web browser?

I would get netbook.

1. netbook comes with builtin webcam and mic.

2. netbook has a keyboard. a) When you're holding ipad, you only have one hand left to type; b) you have to switch to second keyboard layout to add a number; c) when you're typing on ipad, you don't get the feedback like you do from keys on a regular keyboard. So sometimes you hit the wrong keys, and sometimes you're stumbling because you have to keep verifying your typing visually. d) when keyboard is open, it blocks the screen.

3. netbook starts with 120gb hdd. ipad has 32gb or 64gb.

4. netbook has competition in the marketplace, forcing the price down. can get one for less than half price of ipad.

5. don't need to buy applications for a netbook because <drum roll> FLASH WORKS. good luck opening http://instantsfun.es on an ipad.

Well it would be nice if it had usb or sd... since it doesnt have a camera. I think an obvious use for it would be to quickly edit pictures and upload them to the net when your on say vacation or whatever. And am I wrong or isnt the OS not capable of multi tasking?

Not yet, once OS 4 comes out it will have multitasking.

Yup, it's just like a laptop. Connect a flash drive to your desktop, copy anything you want over to it and then to your netbook. Or even better, if you have a home network simply transfer data that way.
