Possibaly if you use Remote Desktop, you will need to leave your laptop on all the times in order to assess it on the Remote Desktop but im not sure

The easy and free way:

1) Download Skype.
2) Create the "webcam" account.
3) Create the "viewer" account.
4) Add the "viewer" account as a contact on the "webcam" account and vice versa.
5) Set the "webcam" account/computer to auto answer from only trusted contacts.
6) Call the "webcam" account from the "viewer" account.
7) View the webcam from your laptop (or any computer you want to configure) from anywhere in the world.

The potentially easy but not-so-free way:

- Purchase and configure software like this.

The potentially much more expensive, but much more flexible method (does not require laptop):

- Purchase an IP Camera. Set it up wherever. Connect it to the web. Log in and view.

what zatharus said, but I personally prefer using MSN (Windows Live Messenger) for it, but that is only because I don't particularly like skype. both will work perfectly fine though.

You could also look into using manycam if you want to use the webcam on the other computer while the other computer is viewing it:
