Cpu underclocked!?

My laptop is running super slow. At first I thought that it was a virus, because when I checked the task manager it said my Cpu was running at 100 percent and I had nothing running. Eventually after reseting it to no avail, I looked at the bios menu and realized that the clock speed for my Amd processor was at 600 megahertz rather than the normal 2600 megahertz. It was actually below the "minimum" value displayed. Meanwhile it says my charger is below the regular 65 watts(and its not). I think these two events are connected. It may be shortening up the power supply to the Cpu because it thinks my charger has low power.

Does anyone know something?

may have cool 'n quiet on. It is on AMD processors and underclocks the CPU when it isn't under load.

For instance, my CPU now with it on is only at 800MHz, rather than 3.3GHz

If you want to check, start your computer, right click my computer, click properties and it will say Prcessor and the model and speed of it.

This is something that I have never experienced. With a slow computer all of a sudden I would think about viruses as well.

Cool n'quiet is that a BIOS entry ?

Anyway have a look in the BIOS either way, sometimes default values might not be optimal. Especially if its brand new. But I get a feeling its not. If its not a new computer I think its really weird you havent experienced this on other occasions before.

Dunno about Cool n' Quiet, but Intel has a similar thing called SpeedStep. If it is indeed that, you SHOULD be able to disable it in your BIOS. It downclocks the CPU to save power, heh.

Although under heavier loads it should be running at "full" speed...

You also might have been running some unwanted processes this has happened to me once.
So the CF members had asked me to post my Hijack this report and do an antimalware scan in safe mode.Try doing that it might work for you

yes it is a BIOS setting, however I'm not entirely sure if they have it or similar on laptops

Yea speed step does the same, and it should be showing full, or higher speed, under even moderate load
