yes but he also said he would like to play new fps at max settings (right?). so when something like crysis 2 or a different game that is even more demanding comes out and he wants to have 8 AA at a nice, high resolution, i don't think a single 460 would be enough. a 5970 obviously would and should last him a very long time...

+1 he would need something more powerful than the GTX 460.
A 5870 or GTX 480 or 5970

And I still think he should go with the AMD rather than the i5.

Thanks for the replies on the graphics card :D I have a bit of money to spend so I do think I'll get the 5970.

Now I'm still curious about the little extras I'll need.

-Hard Drive?
-DVD Drive (Should I go internal or external?)
-USB ports?

All of these are obviously pretty important to me, and weren't listed. I just want to know if I should be investing in these also. I've read the descriptions of all the products pretty thoroughly, and none mention any of the above, so I'm assuming I'll need to invest in these.

Thanks again guys :)

PS - Is there a website where I can learn the lingo? So many AMDs and 5970s and crossfiring terms are being thrown out there. It takes me a while to compare products because I'm not *exactly* sure what's best. Learning the lingo for myself or having a dictionary or something to help me would probably cut down on my questions here.

Hope I'm not bugging you all :D Thanks so much!

some may recommend an ssd for your hard drive but i'd still go with a regular hdd. the one maroon1 linked looks good :good: same with the dvd drive.

your case will have usb ports and your motherboard will have usb ports.

each processor has a certain "socket" type. intel's newest are number ones (i.e. 1156 or 1366). amd uses am2/am2+/am3, am3 being the newest one. just ask us what things are :) i know i'd be happy to inform you.

Hey thanks for the response about the HDD, USB, and DVD Drive! :)

I keep looking things up, and I keep getting more and more questions!

1.) The ripjaw series memory I was recommende was reviewed as not entirely compatible with a AMD motrherboard, since it was made for Intell. I don't want this to be a problem for me, even though I'm reading it can be made to work.

Is there another memory unit that I could use that's just as good but without the hassle? Or am I blowing this situation completely out of proportion?

2.) In terms of sound, do I need a sound card? What's some recommended speakers? Nothing too expensive, I can skimp in the speaker part.

Thanks yet AGAIN! I'll edit the post with more questions if I get them and if there's no other posts after this one!

thanks thanks thanks!

2.) No, you don't need a sound card unless you hunger for insanely good studio quality (that is if you buy a good one) most MOBO's include 2.1 - 7.1 HD audio via the MOBO's HD audio connector. (or via the many audio outputs..Green, black, blue etc... if there are any) Heck, my OLD (now dead) 780i Mobo had 7.1 HD audio avaiable... I doubt new Mobo's don't have that.

Thanks for the answer Ryeong :)

I hate to bump the thread, but I'm still curious about the motherbord question.

I added joh to my friends list, but for some reason it won't let me PM him :\ Was hoping to use PMs so I wouldn't have to keep bumping this topic with more and more questions.

I went to the FAQ to find out how, and it linked me to the PM part of the site, but it says I don't have access. D:

you can't pm until you have 100 posts. just keep asking more questions on here. that's the way things are usually done.

Will do Joh, thanks!

Anyhoo, my first question in my last post is the one that's bugging me a bit. I'll repost:

The ripjaw series memory I was recommended was reviewed as not entirely compatible with a AMD motrherboard, since it was made for Intell. I don't want this to be a problem for me, even though I'm reading it can be made to work.

Is there another memory unit that I could use that's just as good but without the hassle? Or am I blowing this situation completely out of proportion?

i have them with my amd motherboard and haven't had any problems whatsoever. plenty of people have used the exact set on amd systems. just check out some more reviews on newegg.

Alright man :) Thanks for the reassurance.

So far I don't have any more compatibility/'Do I need this?' questions, so I guess when I get home this comming week I'll start ordering.

When I start putting it together I'll probably be back and I'll bump this topic :) I've been doing a lot of research and feel pretty comfortable with the many guides I've found.

Anyhoo, if I do get any more questions while researching I'll be back!

Thanks a lot everyone!

I'm going to update my previous suggestion because newegg dropped the price of i7 870 today. And eVGA GTX 460 1GB model is back in stock

CPU + motherboard (i7 870 + Asus motherboard combo deal)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.437325

GPU - GTX 460 1GB model, also comes with free just cause 2 game
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130565

Case + PSU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.440193

RAM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231303

HDD

DVD burner

If you want to get something better than GTX 460 you may want to get something like HD5870. On the other hand intel i7 870 should last for long time without the need to upgrade.

Hey guys, I'm back :D I just got the money needed to buy the stuff, and I'll be ordering the parts I listed above tomorrow.

I have another question :\ I was asking a lot of about things overlooked when buying parts (USB support, speakers, does it come with a DVD drive, etc.) and I totally forgot to ask about wifi support.

With so many wireless routers around the house I have to ask, do I need anything extra to support wireless networking? Or does the ability to go wireless come with a part that I'm getting (Listed on the previous pages)?

If it doesn't, what do you guys recommend? We use Linksys routers and I think maybe even a dlink or two?

if you are able to run an ethernet cable to the pc then you'll be fine. if not, then you need some sort of card or usb adapter. what speed does your internet run at?

Here we go. Is it possible to get the cards just for routers? Not some of those Laptop cards that can get net access on the road (where you need a subscription)? I'm pretty sure the answer's yes, but any recommendations on cards would be good heheh. I'll look some up myself when I get home from work.

Ok I'm back :D I'm about half way done so far with putting my rig together... and it's 2 in the morning :( Ugh, sleepy.

I'm having problems screwing my graphics card into the rack. It needs to slots, and it fits fine in the case, but the holes don't line up QUITE well enough. It doesnt help I dont have a small screw driver.

Tomorrow I will be back with a smaller screwdriver and a helping hand to help me push it into place while I screw it in, but are there any tips from you guys?

Is a crooked screw ok? I can manage that after a few tries but I dont know if it'll damage the card or if it'll be a shoddy job and the card will fall down and damage other parts?

Any suggestions? This is taking WAY longer than I thought it would XD

you should be able to line up the holes by just pushing (not forcing) the card bracket into place. post some pics if you still can't get it.

Cross-threading a screw probably won't hurt the GPU, but it'll look awful and eventually strip out...

Thanks Drenlin :D I got it with the help of my father. Was a pain in the ass though!

My next question involves a 1394 cable. I'm at work so I havent really looked it up yet but all the videos so far that I've watched and read the steps to don't really show what to do with this thing? I can look it up in the mobo manual where it goes but what does this cable do?

Can I just hide it somewhere or do I need to plug it in?
