hello guys/gals

just joined CF today!

i am in the market for a new comp... i was going to build it but i calculated everything and it will cost more.

so my question is ....

the new comp i am getting comes with a radeon hd 5770. is this good? will i be able to run crysis/arma2 silky smooth? on max settings( processor that comes with the comp is a i7-860 but i am upgrading to the i7 940)

how does the 5770 compare to the 4870 2 gb

and also if i wanted to get say a 5770 2 gb would i have to buy 2 5770 1 gb's?

what are other good video cards that will get me great graphics?

thank you in advance.. sorry if this is sloppy it is my first post.

thx, nick

5770 is good.. but you might consider GTX470-480 or HD5870 or HD5970 if you want those games to run smooth. What resolution do you plan to play with? 5770 won't be good enough in crysis on 1920x1080. I hit 60 fps in crysis maxed out, 4xAA, with my GTX 480 on stock alone. I can reach much higher fps when i overclock.

So, if you don't plan to overclock that 5770 by a huge amount, i would suggest one of the card i mentioned above.

5870, GTX 470/480 and HD5980 is relatively expensive.

GTX 460 is also an cheaper alternative..

if you wait a while, there will probably be more suggestions.

Edit: what is smooth for you? 60 fps? 35 fps?

smooth to me is 60 fps... overclocking? ive heard of it. but my questions there would be how do you overclock.. and is it safe?

i will want to be running on 1920x1080

so which is better the gtx 480 or the hd5970 .. i am assuming those are both better than the gtx470 and the hd5870

thx for fast reply

HD5970 is faster than GTX 480. But GTX 480 is faster than HD5970 under extreme tesselation.

HD5970 is a dual GPU whilst GTX 480 is a single gpu.

Two GTX 480 in Sli is much faster than HD5970, but also MUCH mroe expensive.

How much are you willing to spend on a graphic card(s)?

Around 300 ... I don't have much money to work with...and those cards are $700.... So maybe not 60 fps.... What will get me around 45 50 frames...anything? XD

I agree on the 5850. if you can stretch the budget, get a 5870 to be more futureproof but otherwise the 5850 is a great card.

thank you guys for helping me..... i have decided on the 5850 because i just cant dish out 400 for the 5870.

but now this brings up a new question and a obstacle for me........ when i buy this pc it comes with the 5770.... so i am paying for it.... so technically if i get the 5850 i will be paying for 2 cards...... so the question to ask would be.......should i just build a pc?

and are two 5770's better than a 5850?

A 5870 is way overkill for 1080p. Even a 5850 eats 1080p up.

The GTX460 1gb just came out, and it is a beast. You can't beat the price at $230. I also game at 1920x1080, just got done testing it out and NEVER fell below 60 FPS with 32x AF and 16x AA. With no AA or AF on, it's pegged at the max capped 125 FPS the entire time playing COD WAW. Going to test 8x/8x next.

Since you don't overclock, just get a factory overclocked one-

Also, whats the rest of your setup like? If you have a board capable of SLI, in the future you can buy another gtx460 for SLI. The 460 has the best scaling of any card in SLI, the perfomance is about equal to two gtx470's in SLI because of the better scaling. So you only need to spend $230 now, and down the road get another one when you have more money for insane performance.

An overclocked 1gb gtx460 is actually stronger than a stock clocked 5850-

Why spend $400 on a 5870, when $230 gets you performance in between a 5850 and 5870 and will eat 1080p for breakfast. The new gtx400 cards also handle AA and AF better than ATI's 5k series.

ok so now it is a mix up.... so many to choos from.. but i am able raise my budget up a little bit. so now it is a mix up between the 5870 and the gtx 480..... help me decide. i heard the 480 is better with tessellation but the 5870 is better at running ay a higher frame rate.
any input on what to get would be nice.

thank you in advance

Where did you hear that? The gtx400 series is always better than the comparable ati 5k series at high reolutions with AA and AF.

So what resolution are you running anyway? Didn't you say 1080p? 1080 is not ''high'' resolution anymore. Like I said, my gtx460 eats up 1080p with 16x AA and 32x AF.

Also, you never said what the rest of your setup was.

well here is my setup, it is still in the works as i am building my first computer, please take note that i didn't get any of the parts yet.

i7-930
x-58 sli le
samsung 1 tb
patriot xtreme ddr3 6gb
600 watt psu
22in LCD monitor, 1920x 1080

if 1920x1080 isn't high res, what is nowadays ?

1080 is normal resolution pretty much now. 1920x1200 is a higher one thats popular, but 2048 x 1536 is ''high'' resolution, and 2560x1600 would be very high.

What PSU exactly are you getting? And more details on the ram. Patriot ram isn't really all that great. I would suggest G.Skill or corsair.

Yeah thats good stuff, kinda pricy though. I would honestly just get this G.Skill kit, same price as after the rebate on the corsair, but you don't have to foll with the rebate at all then.

Coolmax isn't really that great of a brand either LOL. Go with corsair on the PSU, this model here, it's cheaper anyway from newegg-

BTW, do you have something against ordering off newegg? You seem apprehensive about it. Newegg is the best, and they pretty much have the best prices as well. That same corsair kit is $20 cheaper orignal price, $10 cheaper after the MIR (microcenter is $200 minus $30 rebate, newegg is $180 minus $20 rebate)-

me? ha ha no i am not against new egg... lol..... the reason i go on microcenter is because there is one close by. so i can just go pick it up and not have to worry about shipping..... but i will check newegg out... one more question.... is OC hard to do? and do you have to over clock everything separately? for example would i have to OC my cpu then OC my RAM or does it just do it all at once?....

i will post my future rig once add the PSU and RAM added in.....

and any suggestions on a low priced high end monitor?

thanks
