Help Replacing Vista With XP on HP Laptop

Howdy,

Purchased a HP Pavillion DV9000 a few years ago and my dislike for Vista (putting it mildly) has finally grown to the point where I'd like to install XP on it instead. My question is will I be able to locate all the drivers from the "Recovery Discs" I made when the laptop was new to reinstall when I've wiped out the drive and reinstalled XP?

Cheers,
Max

If not, you can get the drivers online.

EDIT- Here is the link. Just select your exact model and the drivers will be there.

Maybe, you should try and move on to windows 7. Much more stable, uses less system resources and has a lot of new features over Vista. Seems like the Windows community is very pleased with it.

Thanks for the input, I may move to 7, but have the software to go back to XP for now. Just finished installing XP and it is absolutely lightning fast compared to Vista. I can have a reboot and back into my profile in under 1 minute.......vista took at least 5 before I could launch any programs. It's unbelievable the difference. I don't really care about all the gadgets etc. that came with Vista or 7 for that matter. The wife has 7 on her laptop and the XP on this laptop will run circles around that one on startup etc. I know sometime I'll have to move up, but for now XP is much better IMHO than Vista.

Yes, Vista was a mistake. I would recommend moving to Windows 7 if you have the system resources to do so, but if not, then XP works great for me!

Your Xp system runs circles around your wifes windows 7 machine in boot time?

Does she have a virus or does your computer have better hardware? I only ask cause you do know that windows 7 boot up works very similar to the unix based OS boot up? This being said it has been proven that windows 7 has the most effecient and fastest boot time out of all previous windows OS.

Not trying to be a ass just letting you know man.

Yeah, just timed it boots in less than a minute, but I don't have many apps installed yet, but that shouldn't affect start up time unless those app's are actually starting something. No virus on her 7, but it takes time to load all those gadgets and crap like that, but still twice as fast.

I've never seen a windows 7 installation boot up quicker than my XP install. I think 7 is also slow like vista but not as bad as vista.

Device drivers after installation

Howdy again,

After installing xp and running all the device driver downloads from HP for my model of laptop to run on xp there were about a dozen devices that didn't have drivers. I uninstalled them and hardware wizard found all but these 5. Any ideas where would be the best place to look for them? It didn't find it on my HP recovery discs either...they're only factory equipment so not sure. Maybe HP? don't know. Everything seems to be working so I'm not sure what these are even for? snapped a pic below. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Max

Look on the bottom of the laptop for a sticker that lists the exact model number of the laptop. It will look like dv90xxyy, where x's are numbers and y's are letters for example. dv9001ea. Once I know that I can help you more.

I looked at the bottom and the service tag is dv9428ca so I went to HP put in that model and it pulled up the drivers associated with xp for that machine and I installed them all, but there were 2 for the Bios, but I only installed the one that was required if the laptop has an AMD processors which mine has so I didn't install the other one. I don't think it would be a bios thing any way would those?

downloaded and started installation, got about 3/4 the way through and started bitching about wanting "nvefdxp.sys on NVIDIA nForce networking controller driver disc 1 is needed.................so had to cancel that installation, but it did ask if i wanted to install the ide driver so I said yes, rebooted and now only the 3 base system devices are left yellow. the coprocessor and SM Bus Controller are now cleared

Cheers,

I don't think XP has support for those base system devices. However, right click on one of them and click on properties, click on the details tab and give me the 4 digit vendor and device id numbers. They look like the attached image if it actually shows it.

If it doesn't show anything similar to that then post what it says.

Win7 is not nearly as slow as Vista in my experience. Depends greatly on the computer of course how fast it's going to boot compared to anothers. I found that both my laptop and desktop booted nearly twice as fast after my upgrade. A little over half a minute to a usable state, compared to about a minute with vista. After boot, windows 7 still seems nearly twice as fast. I'm pretty sure XP is going to always have a faster boot as you suggested.

This is my experience though, and others might not find that the case. I also refuse to run any antivirus software for I've found too many a slow, yet powerful system slowed down by it.

I'm one of those users that simply loved Vista though and always found it speedy and reliable.

No More Device Errors

Thanks John,

That cleared up the last device errors in device manager. All now is good. Thanks again for your efforts. Just in closing, it really is amazing how much faster xp is than vista even with all the programs loaded. Still booting to my user profile in < 1 min.

Cheers,
Max
