Clean up routine, whats missing?

I often get asked to remove virus's and generally clean up friends and families pc's. God knows why as its usually through pure luck when i manage to fix anything. What i want to know is what people do when they have a clean up and what they use, just so i don't miss anything. I honestly am not that great on computers so please don't list stuff like go into the bios and do this and that as i won't have a clue!

Anyway here's what i generally do to tidy up a bit.

1 - msconfig and turn off nearly everything
2 - add / remove programs and remove stuff which is obvious rubbish
3 - open the browser and remove any of the aditional toolbars
4 - check for windows updates
5 - restart pc
6 - use an online virus scanner - f.secure.com
7 - registry mechanic
8 - tune up utilities
9 - hijack this
10 - cc cleaner
11 - atf cleaner
12 - emisoft anti malware
13 - avast
14 - scan disk
15 - defrag

most of the programs are full versions and i would set avast to run all the time as an antivirus and schedule scan disk and defrag. So what have i missed, would you do anything in a different order, are any of the above a waste of time. Any suggestions would be really appreciated as i have yet again got to sort out my daghters laptop!

Pretty much the same, but I use chrome, so there are no toolbars, avast is my workhorse, it does everything for me, and I defragment the HDD every year or so.

I agree with doing the following entries

1 - msconfig and turn off nearly everything
2 - add / remove programs and remove stuff which is obvious rubbish
3 - open the browser and remove any of the aditional toolbars - which can also be done from add/remove programs
9 - hijack this
10 - cc cleaner
13 - avast or whatever the installed virus scanner is
15 - defrag - if needed

However, I highly recommend Malwarebytes Antimalware as your malware scanner. Also you would want to make sure that you have the latest version of Java, flash, and adobe reader. You would need to uninstall all previous versions of java or download and run JavaRA which will do it for you.

Registry cleaners are not really recommended as most of the time they do more damage then anything. CCleaner can be used as a general registry cleaner and the only one actually recommended.

Scan disk is not required unless you suspect errors on the hard drive and usually you can tell that without doing anything.

Well I visit pretty much anywhere and everywhere and use Microsoft Essentials and the W7 firewall. CCleaner is run every night after the days session and all cookies are wasted, every few weeks I update and run Malwarebytes and that's about it, but once in a while I will post a hijackthis log for someone to look over.
Defrag every few months but never use a Reg cleaner stronger than CCleaner, once the registry is damaged there could be no turning back.
Windows updates are checked manually and only the important ones are downloaded, the others only if I want them.

I do this :
4 - check for windows updates
5 - restart pc
15 - defrag
All the other points, I don't do, it takes too much time to do them and I don't need them.

P.S.: Nice picture, banned and still able to create such a post ?
