Is this a good sound card?

For that money the card should be alright but remember it is PCIE connector to motherboard and why would you want to buy 5.1 speakers if you are going to use a card with 7.1, kind of defeats the purpose of buying that particular sound card.

That is a wonderful soundcard, though those speakers won't really do it justice. Are you looking to use this setup for gaming or for listening to music?

Id have to disagree with you there,Logitech make fantastic speakers for the price.

To the OP,i have the Logitech X-540s which are very similar,Had them for two years and the volume pad died,But...contacted logitech up and they replaced them within a week,i didnt even need to send the old ones back :D

very good speakers for the money.

Also keep in mind that the card being 7.1 it can do everything up to 7.1, inlcuding 5.1, 2.1 etc etc

They do make good computer speakers for the money, but that soundcard is approaching audiophile grade. You need some pretty damn good speakers to show its full potentials. I would have gone with something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836127004 for music and a higher end logitech system for gaming.

The problem with 5.1 surround sound system (especially cheap ones) is that they have boomy sounding subwoofers and zero midrange. All the midrange speakers are tiny and can't really reproduce anything in the middle accurately. So you end up with mushy bass and some high end stuff (which is okay for games I guess) but pretty poor for music.

Well if I go for that sound card I will have about £100 to go with for speakers. An alternative would be to get a cheaper sound card and more expensive speakers. I would prefer to keep this below £200 and if any knows of anything good (preferably on eBuyer) your help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Well 7.1s aren't available on eBuyer. And i'm not sure how much it will cost me for 7.1.

scan.co.uk I suppose or overclockers. I ordered all the parts of my PC off eBuyer so I would prefer them but anything trustworthy and UK based is ok.

By the way, I'll be using it for music and games. My music ranges from classical and such to dnb so quite a big gap. ;D

Personally I think music comes across better on bookshelf speakers and games come out better on 5.1 speakers. I guess it really depends on what you value more.

Logitech does not make good speakers. Some m-audio av40s or klipsch pro media 2.1s will be a lot better. Just get a slightly cheaper sound card.

Do you really want 5.1?
I do recommend 2.1/ 2.0.

Asus DX2 is good, but it seems slight expensive at ebuyer.

While for speaker, these worth have a look
M-AUDIO Studiophile AV40, as other mentioned, it is big if you put it on your desk.

Audioengine 2 Speaker System, It is small but with good sound.

Acoustic Energy AEGO M 2.1, Good sound, but I do feel the subwoofer is a bit big for my room.
