Store bought computer or custom built?

Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7?

With the information provided so far, the "Green" hard drive isn't helping.

store bought computers really arent the best in specs unless you go all out and custom build a computer through say like a dell or sony website. custom built computers are better because you have the option to max out the specs way more then if you were to buy one premade. or maybe you bought a cheap barbone kit.

honestly a quad core processor isnt that bad
the wd green drive is horrible got alot of bad reviews and isnt to reliable... i would recoment the WD black edition
and 2gb ram? ddr2?

you shouldnt have this issue based on the specs you listed. although the Green drive isnt helping! LOL

from my experience pcs tend to slow down dramatically after a few months. so what i do is partition the harddrive 100gb 1st partition and the rest partition under data... (2nd partition) the idea is that every 3 months you format and reinstall windows xp. with the second partition you keep all your files (movies, music, Pictures, documents) so that when you reinstall xp you dont loose your data because your only messing with the first partition.

your computer should run fine after the xp reinstall...
personally i got a copy of xp sp3 and when i install it and download the updates my computers messes up big time and i end up with blue screen of death.. i think the new updates are crap. so when i reinstall xp sp3 i disable updates... but make sure you go into device manager and make sure all your devices are installed

ddr3... you should be having a problem then.
just do a system reinstallation every 3-5 months to keep your pc at best performance! :)

Sounds like the machine has a case of Winrot. that is windows has become bloated and probably loaded with viruses and spyware.

The Caviar Green hard drive and only 2GB of RAM aren't helping either (is it a single 2gb stick or 2x1gb sticks?)

2gbs of ddr3 are awsome not to forget to mention the guy has a quad core....

the only thing i can think of is what is the ghz of the processor? 2.5 and up is fair enough, anything below would be a reason why your computer may be slow

by the way i got a 2.8ghz p4 with 1gb ram ddr2 ram windows 7 and the computer rocks. not slow at all... ( 1 of 4 home computer) and this guys got a quad core, blows my p4 out of the water with especially with his ddr3 ram. if its slow jusr do a reinstall of windows xp... the Winrot therory ""never herd of it"" is correct. this should work

and fat32 from reviews is an unstable format... ntfs is way better... the only reason anyone would use a fat32 is on a external harddrive to read and write between mac and pc

Man, it's pretty deep in here! Forget all that useless crap. Download Process Explorer from Microsoft Tech Net. Install. Copy and paste to desktop. Right click and run as Admin. Check what process is using what amount of CPU and memory. You can post back here what is using most. If it's system idle that's the hog you have a malware problem. You can also identify trojans from memory usage. Try suspending processes one at a time to see if that helps. Just right click and chose suspend. DO NOT screw with any of the svchost.exe, csrss.exe, lsass.exe, lsm.exe or winlogon.exe.

yea sure they are plenty of ways to speed up your computer by downloading programs and having them taking care of your system for you with the """malwarebytes/anti-virus software, repair software(Advanced SystemCare,Registry Mechanic) and defrag."""

and with the ""reality_check"" dude with the whole program of Microsoft Tech Net you can do the same exact thing by going to "start task manager" (ctrl+alt+deleate) and clicking on processes and clicking end process on anything unfamiliar....

really all them programs is a bit time consuming and then you'll have the anti-virus on the bottom right corner eating up your performance and slowing down your pc depending on your specs. especially when your running at low gz. of processor speed and 2gb ram. and the whole defrag takes longer then a system reinstall up to 5x's as long...

the reason why i recomended system reinstall is because it works, pc will be like brand new yea youll probably have to reinstall a few programs like winrar and itunes etc. but i normally keep those in a folder on my second partition when i do a system reinstall... basically aint nothing better then a brand new pc feeling... some people are to lazy to setup their computer back to the way it was before a system reinstallation, sure it'll take about 10 minutes reinstalling programs but it beats a defrag any day... make sure you also have a folder with the device setups for your hardware in device manager.

and if your a gamer like me, install your games to a second harddrive that way you wont have to ever worry about reinstalling games and loosing saved data. and when you reinstall a system just go into the game harddrive and make a shortcut of the game exe to the desktop and your good to go.

being organized makes life easier without all these unnessacary programs
by the way i havent used antivirus in over 3 years and i never got a virus.

You must have this down to a science because when I do a re-installation of Windows it takes me hours to get all my programs back to where I want them.

I would encourage you to look at solid state drives rather than having to do re-installs of your Windows all the time. Good solid state drives can breathe new life into an old system. I am presently saving and waiting for the seasonal sales. Right now I am looking this one:

G.SKILL Phoenix Series FM-25S2S-60GBP1 2.5" 60 gigabyte Internal Solid State Drive - $130
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231375

Over 225 megabyte per second read and write speeds for the above drive.

ohh cool! thanks megabytes, i was recently looking for a ssd for my new i7 950 build im making in two weeks, maybe ill use ur recomendation on the

but ive been hearing alot of people say that they bought a ssd and it hasnt been much of an improvement from their regular harddrive. i have a WD Black Edition 2TB 7200rpm with 32mb cache with a dual processor in the harddrive... you think that ssd would be better in performance vs. my wd black edition....

and by the way your right about the ssd will definitly help speed up your computer, would be a HUGE improvement from the "green" drive your using!

by the way whats the green drive rpm? 5400 or 7200? if its 5400 that could be another reason your computer is slow

That's a good drive. A single stick of RAM is also a bottleneck, buy another identical stick of what you have and put in the same colour slot as the current one is one. You will have double the memory (helps for games and intensive stuff) and be running in dual channel (double the memory bandwidth!) which helps quite a bit as well.
